Multiple choice question incorrect before answering

Aug 31, 2018

Hello to you all,

Recently I encountered problems with a course, which runs in two separate LMS systems. The course contains a number of multiple choice questions, placed  at the end of different sections. In general the course works fine, but some participants get stuck when they reach a question.

As soon as the multiple choice question appears, they see the message that the answer is incorrect (bottom of slide).  It is impossible to select an answer and the only way to go forward is by clicking the Submit button. All other questions afterwards produce the same error message, which means a participant can never pass because all the (not given) answers are treated in the same way.

What makes it especially strange is the fact that it seems to occur randomly. I have been able to reproduce this ones in SCORM Cloud. It also is not restricted to a specific slide or question. It can happen at section two or six.

The course was originally made in Storyline 2. To check if it is an outdated issue, I converted the course to Storyline 360. Unfortunately the same problem came forward in the most recent version of Storyline 360.

The original LMS output format was SCORM 1.2. I have changed it into SCORM 2004 (3d edition) after being advised so by the support team of the LMS provider. No change in outcome.

Does anyone recognize this problem and – if so – is there an explanation/solution for this issue?

Thanks n advance for taking part in this discussion.

Hi Leslie,

Five days ago I have sent you the .story file of a project that does not act normal. Because of the size, I made use of WeTransfer. According to an alert of WeTransfer the file has not been downloaded yet. I would advise you to do this within the next 24 hours, because the opportunity to download it will be gone.

If you prefer another way of sending the file to you, please let me know.

Hello Leslie,

The first link you see in this mail, should be a direct download link from
WeTransfer.

Download link
https://we.tl/t-Slst6rlenr

If that does not work, you should be able to find a mail in your system
coming directly from WeTransfer which is sent to the following address:

reply-546237@heroes-prod-reply.articulate.com

If both do not do the job, please let me know. In that case I will use the
link in your last e-mail.

Kind regards,

Johan Visser

Hi Leslie,

Thank you for taking a look at my project. As you suggested, I have followed
the course in SCORM Cloud. No unwanted answers this time. You have changed
the interface of the player, but have you made any other changes to the
course?

There was one thing that caused a flaw in the course. At the end of each
section there are two to four multiple choice sections. In the last section
I clicked in the menu on the second question before submitting the first. I
was able to answer the second, but when returning to the first it was no
longer possible to submit it.

At the very end of the course I have created two slides with the results of
all questions. There the question was marked as being answered correctly. In
the final score of the course it did not come through however. The total
score is 88,87%, which means that two questions are incorrect. Probably
because the Submit action was disabled.

This has nothing to do with the initial issue, but perhaps it is something
to check out for other purposes?

If you have changed the settings of the course, I would like to know which
ones. As the problem is erratic the only way to find out is by letting a
number of participants taking a shot at it. Any other suggestions are most
welcome.

Kind regards,

Johan

Hi Johan,

I adjusted the Player to allow free navigation of the menu since it was set to restricted. That was the one item I changed to make testing a tad easier.

I know tracking down an issue that is not consistently reproducible is challenging.

You mention having an issue with the last section. Do you mean Scene 6, which has the last questions, or the actual last section Scene 8?

Johan Visser

Hi Leslie,

The issue with the last section refers to section 6 with the last set of
multiple choice questions. The question that went wrong was the first one
(what means EDD?). Perhaps it is because you removed the restriction, making
it possible to go further before answering the question?

To make your search for the other issue a little easier, I can add that the
message at the bottom is equal to the message you see when a review of the
questions/answers is active. The big Q is why the software reacts as if a
review takes place instead of answering a qusrtion. In other words: which
trigger gets activated whem a review is started?

If time is on my side, I wil do some more testing with the link you sent me.
I can only hope that the system comes up with the same message, so you can
see (??:) what is going on.

Hi Johan,

Above, you mentioned:

In the last section, I clicked on the menu on the second question before submitting the first. I
was able to answer the second, but when returning to the first it was no
longer possible to submit it.

This is due to the triggers that have been set up on each question.

For instance, for slide 6.10:

So, by clicking on the subsequent question on 6.11 for instance, you would no longer be allowed to submit 6.10 because now the variable is set to false.

That looks like it's working as intended.

I'm not running into any roadblocks when viewing your course.

What browser/environment are you viewing the link I shared above in?
