Multiple course sections, possible to report partial completion to LMS?

Aug 29, 2017

I would like to create a single course using Storyline 2 that has an optional advanced module in it, rather than creating two courses with mostly duplicated content. The idea is that learners could opt to do the main section of the course only, and pass a quiz to complete that section, and could opt in to a supplemental section, also completed with a quiz. What I don't know how to do is to tell the LMS that the student has successfully completed either the main section, or the main+optional sections. Am I approaching this badly? I could create a certificate of completion for the optional section that only the SCORM package creates, leaving the LMS certificate for the main (and required) section but this feels like I would be missing a reporting opportunity in the LMS for the learner's transcript - that would only show the main section completion, correct?

Hi Sarah, this is a really interesting idea! Storyline tracks quiz results from 1 results slide, so it sounds like you'll need to use a little creativity in your set-up. If you can give us a few more details, the community can chime in and share their ideas with you!

  • Were you hoping to track the scores of the optional quiz?
  • Could you track the scores of the main quiz, and simply provide a custom certificate for the optional quiz?

Hi!

My situation is that I have a product that has two variants. They are essentially the same but for a small number of additional features. It is very likely that from software release to release, changes will be made in the common parts of the software more often than in the additional features. It's also desirable to allow a person to learn about the "bulk" features without the additionals, since they are reasonably special in their application. This is what led me to thinking about a course where the learner can choose whether they want to complete the whole thing, or just the larger common section. That way they can come back and learn the additional features when they need them, and I can have a single course to keep updated instead of two.

I know you can generate a course where the user determines which scenes get played. I know I can place a quiz at the end of each scene to determine if they passed that section. I know I can display their individual quiz/section pass/fail states. And I could probably have the SCORM module create the certificates as well. What I don't know how to do is get a single SCORM module to report the state of the course to our LMS as anything other than passed/incomplete (in this case). In reality, it's not the whole course pass/fail I'm interested in  - it's just the section pass/incomplete states, because a large number of our users would only be interested in the common section of the course. I would like to issue certificates from the LMS for both sections independently, and have those appear in their LMS transcripts, which I realize is a bit odd.

Thanks!

Sarah

Thanks for that context, Sarah. When publishing Articulate Storyline content to a learning management system (LMS), you have four reporting options from which to choose:

  • Passed/Incomplete
  • Passed/Failed
  • Completed/Incomplete
  • Completed/Failed

Like you mentioned, those reporting options are for the entire course, not a single section of the course.

Since a more custom set-up is what you're after, you may be able to achieve what you're looking to do using Javascript. We have some folks in the community who are rockstars with custom set-ups and Javascript, so I'll leave it in their hands!

I'm also loooking to do this type of reporting. In my case, I want to build training based on permission levels in an application. When completed for a user's specific permission level, they would be all done and just need the course to output either a Passed result for a section or a list of passed/incomplete results for all sections. Is this possible?
