Multiple fill in the blank questions on one slide

Jul 28, 2013

I'm trying to figure out how to have multiple fill in the blanks questions on one question slide. I've attempted to add data entry text fields but can't seem to find a way to get it to work.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Hey Steve! Welcome to the community =) By default, Storyline doesn't evaluate more than one data entry field on the same slide. However, you may be able to evaluate multiple fields on the same slide by disguising a Freeform Pick One question as demonstrated in this video tutorial:

Hope this helps you achieve what you were looking to do!! =) Have a nice day!

Hi there,

I keep trying to do this but it won't work, I thought I copied the instructions exactly but when I try the quiz slide in 'preview' it comes back with the error message 'Invalid Answer: you must complete the question before submitting'.

I have tried the option where several responses are possible (using another 'true/false' variable called textentrycorrect) and the simpler option of only one possible answer, but neither are workable. I thought it might not be functioning because it was a previous and not published but it doesn't work in the published version either.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Thank you,

Lucy

Hi Lucy,

I had a similar, very frustrating experience with the 'invalid answer'...

The trigger for the correct answer worked, but incorrect answers were getting the 'invalid' thing. My mistake was in the conditions- I had the correct response requiring variable 1 equal to X, AND variable 2 equal to Y, etc etc, and the incorrect response with variable 1 not equal to X AND variable 2 not equal to Y.

What I should have done was for the incorrect response, variable 1 not equal to X OR variable 2 not equal to Y etc. So obvious, yet I wasted a whole day trying to figure it out!!

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for sharing your file here. I took a look and I think the issue you're running into is the trigger order and the fact that there is no "submission" trigger. I'd set up the slide to "submit interaction" when the user clicks the next button - and then they'll see the feedback and from there advance to the next slide. Also, the triggers to adjust the state of the "correct" or "incorrect" box will need to be before the trigger to submit the interaction. Since you're adjusting the state of those based on the user clicking the next button - it'll create it as a player trigger instead of a object trigger. I tried to test this out in your file, but couldn't seem to enter text into your text entries - and I noticed there was a long list of potential variables, so I did also want to offer a reminder in regards to the directions to work on your project files as described here.

I'm having a problem with my triggers that I can't seem to figure out. I know it must be something obvious that I'm just not getting.

I watched the video and was able to all triggers for an incorrect answer but can't seem to get the triggers to work for a correct answer. At first I thought it was because I was using "equals to" and not "equals to (ignore case)". But that didn't help either. My submit interaction is at the bottom. And I"m just not sure waht I'm missing.

Leslie,

Thank you for the help. But now it's having the opposite problem. It's generating the correct answer. But when I put in the incorrect answers I get the "invalid" sign, similar to what other people had problems with. I made sure the submit interaction is at the bottom and tried to change from "And" to "Or" and the incorrect answer is still being marks as invalid.

Hi Storyline Team,

I got through all the instructions and steps documented here and had the issue with the quiz trigger being above the correct/incorrect trigger. I was getting a message that I had to complete the question. Some background is that my entry boxes are number, not text.

In my infinite wisdom, I started my troubleshooting by going into the variable management tool. I changed the variable default to the correct answer, but found that displays the answer in the preview. Obviously not what I wanted. SO, I changed them back to 0 as the were when I stumbled across them.

NOW, my interaction works, but the number entry box display the 0 when I really want it to display "enter your answer here"! I can't seem to get the zero (0) to go away now!
