Multiple Quiz Attempts

Feb 11, 2016

Hello! I am working with StroyLine 2 and am trying to have multiple quiz attempts.

My course is a video followed by a few questions. If they get any wrong they have to go back and watch the video again and re-try the questions. I can get the slide to jump back to the video but the questions are frozen out.

I think this is because when I select 'none' under feedback it doesnt allow me to have multiple attempts at the questions, only if I select 'By Question'. however I don't want participants to get feedback at each question, I just want them to re-do the whole quiz until they get everything right.

Please help!

Hi Bree

Glad you got that sorted.

Next question  - you could set up a number variable (attempts) default to 0.

Add a trigger to 'adjust variable 'attempts' add 1 when user clicks the 'retry quiz' button.

Then on the result slide have a trigger to hide the retry quiz button or show a layer when timeline starts on result slide if variable = xx where xx is however many attempts you want them to have.

Shout out if you need more help.

Ok...answer this quick quiz

1. You want them to do the whole quiz once (without individual feedback on each question) - Yes or No

2. They can then click the 'Retry quiz' if they got a fail?

3. You want them to have how many attempts?

If you want to upload your .story file I'll try and update it for you

Thank you Wendy!

1. Yes, the whole quiz without individual question feedback

2. Yes, if not 100% i want them to re-try the whole quiz

3. 3 attempts total then a layer that tells them to speak to their manager.

FYI my buttons are hidden under the 'here' part of the 'please click here' sentences.

Thank you!!

Hi Bree

see if this is what you are after.

You had set the variable attempts up as a 'text' variable instead of a 'number' variable so I deleted the text variable and created a new one. I also put the reference on the result slide so you can see it changing.

See the triggers on the results slide for how it now works.

Shout out if you have more questions or it's not working how you wanted.

Hi Wendy,

I read Bree's question and your initial response and was doing a happy dance because it solved precisely the same issue for me. But after I implemented the solution, another problem arose. My first quiz is a bank of five or six questions from which four are drawn randomly. When I get to the quiz and take it, deliberately answering some wrong to trigger the "Try again" feature, I am presented with four questions, but when I "Try again" I am only presented with three. This triggers the failure layer again because the user is required to answer all four questions correctly in order to proceed. What could be happening to produce this error?

Update: it seems to have something to do with the navigation settings. I have to use restricted navigation for this course, but I unlocked it so I could test more easily, and when I did so the quizzes behaved properly. When I re-locked the navigation to "restricted", the first quiz worked properly but the second produced only three questions on the second attempt.

Hi Wendy,

After I'd messed around with the file some more I came to the conclusion that there was a gremlin in there somewhere, so I have submitted a trouble ticket. I created a test file (deleted most of the content slides to make it shorter) and when I run it I get inconsistent results - ie, the quizzes will work sometimes and not others.  I'm attaching my test file, and I'd be interested to know if you spot anything weird about it, but I think I'm going to try deleting all the questions and start over.

After a fair bit of experimentation I came to the conclusion that  Robert was absolutely right, and my question slides were somehow corrupted when I imported them (I had originally created some of them for use in a different course a year or so ago). I deleted all the question slides and re-entered them manually, and now the published course is working as intended.

I have imported content slides from other courses numerous times, but this was the first time I had tried importing questions. I guess I'll stick to entering quizzes manually from now on!

Thanks for your help!
