Multiple (ungraded) Quizzes and Results Slides, Problem with Variables

Jun 19, 2017

I'm building a course that has a total of 6 quizzes. None of them are graded (aka being reported to the LMS). They are more like learning activities and test-out options (to test out of lessons).

The problem is, they WERE working (at least i thought they were) but upon lots of testing, now it seems only 2 of the 6 are working and I think the issue comes down to the Variables that get created when I insert a Results slide. It seems that ALL SIX results slides are using the SAME Variables (Results.PassPercent, Results.PassPoints, Results.ScorePercent, Results.ScorePoints). When I look in the Variables list, there are 3 of each (labeled as Results1.xxxx and Results2.xxxx).

The ones with 1 and 2 in their names are being used in 2 of the quizzes and they function accurately. But the other 4 ALL use Results.xxxx and so none of them work right. HOW do I get the additional variables to show up?

I tried:

- deleting and recreating the Results slides (so many times, this never works and I'm tired of rebuilding the slides)

- manually creating the Variables but I have no idea how to tell the quiz questions to adjust those variables since I don't see any triggers on the quiz questions for adding points up

- copy and pasting results slides and moving into the appropriate scenes.

Do you have any advice?

Hi there Ashley, sorry that's happening! I've seen this problem pop up in the forums before, specifically with Storyline 360 and content library results slide templates. Are you also using Storyline 360?

You should have a new set of variables with each results slide. Since you've got 6 quizzes, I would expect to see Results.xxxx, Results1.xxxx,...Results5.xxxx.

You'll want to edit the variables on the slide to match the variables in the trigger pane. Also, each results slide should reference a different variable.

If you're still getting stuck, I'd be glad to lend a hand. Just attach your file here, and I'll take a peek inside. Thanks!

I'm attaching my course. You'll see there are 3 sections, each with a Lesson + Quiz, and a Test Out Quiz, for a total of 6 quizzes. I don't know how to get it to give me new variables for each quiz. The only ones that are working are the ones in the Vishing section -- they gave me Results1.xxx and Results2.xxxx

Hi Ashley

I can see the issue - I also created a new file and tried to create new result slides but it will not add the variables.  It successfully creates the first result slide/variables in a scene but once you add the second result slide in the same scene, the variables are not created.

The result variables are system generated and you cannot manually add them. I would submit a case with Articulate and get them to take a look at your file or offer a workaround to getting it going.

I tried that too Walt - I deleted all result slides, saved the file and could see when re-opened that all result variables were removed. I then created a new scene - added the first result slide and the variables were created, added another result slide - no variables. Deleted that result slide, created another new scene added the result slide - no variables created.  Looks like part of my post above didn't come through.

Thanks for sharing your file, Ashley. I'm seeing exactly what you described, and this relates to the issue we're tackling with Content Library results slides in Storyline 360. I'm sorry for the frustration this is causing you, but rest assured our team is on it!

In the meantime, you'll want to use basic graded results slides instead of templates from the content library. You can certainly copy/paste the slide objects from the template slides to the basic slides so they will match the style of the rest of your course.

Thanks again for bringing this up, and I apologize that it's slowing you down.

Alyssa, seems to be a trend as I am having a similar issue and Wendy copied me on this specific thread. I first reported my findings here after seeing Joshuas issue: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/360-not-creating-new-result-slide-variables#reply-442631  I am hoping Ashley will help sort it out as like others in the middle of project deliverable work and this has been a "show stopper"

So far I've recreated four of the six using the plain standard results slides and things seem to be working. I'm copying over the design elements since I like the layout of the Content Library ones better, but the Results variables are auto-creating correctly with the different numbers now. I've tested the first 4 quizzes in preview mode and they seem to be working correctly so far!

Thanks for chiming in here, Steve. We realize this is causing lots of headaches, and this bug is a priority fix for us. Now that you're subscribed, you'll be notified immediately when we post an update here.

I'm glad the basic results slides are working well for you, Ashley! Thanks for coming back around to give us an update. 😊

Great news!  Another update for Articulate 360 is now available.  It includes a few important fixes and new features that you'll see in the release notes here.

The item you may be interested in is:

Quizzes weren't scored correctly when the same Content Library result slide was added to a course more than once. Now Storyline asks to create a new set of variables each time you insert the same result slide, resolving the conflict.

Launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for each application. Details here.
