We are using SharePoint to host our content. The learners that access this content do not have write permissions, so they are unable to unzip a file and save contents to a drive. They can, however, simply unzip a file and run that file. I need to know if Articulate Storyline 2 can publish into a self-executable file that can run without the need for further extraction. Thanks in advance for your help!
That's an idea to consider. I am coming from using Captivate that allowed for a self-executable file as a publishing option. I was really hoping that it was a possibility for Storyline 2 as well and that I'm just missing the option somewhere. Is it not an option for Storyline 2?
Well, i think this is the purpose of publishing for web. You link to the html, and it runs. I have not used captivate or ever published something as a self-executable. When dealing with the web, ive always used a simple HTML page to host w/e content i want to display. especially on sharepoint as it makes it pretty easy to set up links to html pages.
Im honestly not sure why you would prefer an exe on the web. If you plan on distributing the content via hardware or developing a desktop app, then of course.
Im not 100% clear on the idea of a self-executing exe. To me that sounds like something every browser and OS would want to prevent.
But i do know that hosting eLeaearning through sharepoint with HTML pages works beautifully, i did it for years.
The self-executable file contains the player and all the content so it doesn't need to use a browser to run. It's actually a pretty nice feature and has worked very well for us.
oh, ok. I reread your original post, i think i misunderstood what you were wanting to accomplish.
I may not be able to help you here, ive tried to get an exe to launch through sharepoint before and i have not had success that did not involve downloading the contents to the users hard drive first or presenting the content through a different platform, ie: creating content as a SWF and placing it in a HTML wrapper. or if using creation software, publishing for web.
Sorry, i dont have the answer i think your looking for. Hopefully someone else in the community with some knowledge of how captivate achieved this can help you.
No worries -- from Captivate I upload the .exe file zipped because SharePoint is crabby about those .exe files. The learner only has to open the zip to run the player.
I don't know about how this would work with Sharepoint, but we offer a publish to CD/local source which creates the .exe file you're referring to that would launch the course in it's own player. I would suspect if you were to upload to Sharepoint users would need to download the entire published output folder to their local drive and then play it from there - so I don't think that matches with what you're looking to have based on your previous experience.

Couldn't you just host the non-zip folder and link to the html/html5 file? (when publishing for web)
like when hosting on any other platform like this,
my StoryLine module: https://s3.amazonaws.com/pen-first.bucket/Anthropomorphic+Watering+can+-+Storyline+output/story_html5.html
In sharepoint you would just set up a page with links on it and give the user access to that page, (view/read i think would be enough).

The short answer is SL cannot.
