Hi there William and Joanna,

You can add an Exit tab to the Storyline player, if you don't want to use custom buttons within the slide. This won't look like the other buttons, but will be accessible from the player itself.

To do so, click on "Player". From here, make sure you have the "Features" section selected.

In the "Player Tabs" section, you'll see a small paper/sheet icon for "...Add", click this.

In a new window, you can enter the name for the tab and add triggers to this tab.

Here's how it should look:

I hope this helps!

What if we want it to trigger a slide with an "Are you sure you want to exit" Yes/No?  I got this to work if the exit button is on the slide working with layers, and I've even tried having the exit button in the player fire the slide that otherwise works...

So, I created a new button in the player entitled exit course.  On click of this new item, I want to prompt them whether or not they are sure.  If yes, exit course. If no, resume where they were.

Possible?

Hello :)

I am able to get a button to work just fine on a slide. The problem is in the viewer. Let me show a screenshot.

This is the button that works with no issue, within a slide. As you said, I accomplished this with layers.

However, I want it to function the same way on the viewer, but I don't think you can assign layers to viewer buttons. I also noted that I could set a trigger, but the only trigger available is "End Course". No option to say no and revert back to the slide you're currently on if you didn't mean to exit.

Thanks for updating your response to include the screen shots - as you can see replying to the forums via e-mail does not allow those attachments to come through, but does include your signature. You are welcome to edit that if needed.

I'm not clear on what you mean by 'you want it to work in the viewer'. Do you have this sample .story file that we could take a look at? If you cannot share it here in the forums, you are welcome to share privately here.

What I would like is in the viewer picture that I sent....at the top right there is an Exit Course button. However, I cannot get it to function such that it gives a user a yes or no option as to whether they wanted to close. I can put an exit button on each and every slide and it works just fine....just as you pictured. However, I'd rather it be on the viewer and function the same way...but you can't do the same layering in the viewer screen as far as I know...

Was that any clearer? I'm new to articulate.....so I'm unsure about the file you're speaking of...I'll try to post the file as an attachment.

Hi Wilhelm

glad that will work for you.

  1. deleted the layer that had the YES NO button
  2. used the slide with the YES NO button as a lightbox slide in a trigger (see 3.)
  3. In the player Exit course modified the trigger to show the lightbox slide when they clicked the tab (see 4)
  4. Added a trigger to the No button to close the lightbox when user clicked - this closes the lightbox and takes them back to the slide they were on.

Please don't hesitate to shout out if there is anything else you need and welcome to the forum!

Hello:

I am running into some captcha issues when trying to upload a story. I’m guessing it is too large. I’m hoping that someone can walk me through the process.

So, when I am working with slides in “Try Mode”, Storyline creates several layers. What I want to do is play an audio clip prior to any action necessary on the part of the learner. Right now, for instance, the first action is for the learner to click on “New Message”, but the audio “First, click on the New Message Button” will only play if they are already hovering over the exact spot that they are supposed to click. I want the audio on the entire series to play prior to any input from the user, not have it tied to the “Tip Caption” layer.

Is there any easy way to accomplish this for all slides?

Wilhelm Burger

So I found out that I inadvertently recorded on the Caption layer. Once I placed the audio files on the base layer, things were just fine. The trigger was "resume timeline on this slide when media completes" object = desired audio file.

Now if I could only get all of the screen record modes and audio overlays to have a normalized sound. Sounds kind of sloppy :(

Hi there:

Now that I'm done freaking out, I wonder if you could validate a thought of mine. When I preview my entire course within Storyline, the exit button works just fine. However, when I publish it in SCORM 2004 format, and try to run it outside of Storyline, the exit button does not work. Is this because it has to actually be published into an LMS like Cornerstone before it will work in the SCORM 2004 format?

Weird things happened to the storyline too...like my resources button was all of a sudden all lower case, and my previous button was capitalized while the next button was all lower case. These two issues seem to have resolved themselves, but as for the exit course button?

Hi Wilhelm,

We'd always recommend uploading to a server or LMS to ensure that things work as expected, so definitely give it a try on one of those options. If you don't want to upload to your live site yet, you could always use SCORM Cloud for LMS output, or Amazon S3 for web output.

Also, the exit button is something that can not work as expected due to particular browser or LMS security restrictions as detailed here.

Wilhelm Burger

Hi there ☺

Thanks so much for the reply! I launched this in SCORM Cloud, and it worked as expected. The only issue is that upon relaunch, when it asks if I’d like to resume where I left off, it brings me back to my “Are you sure you want to exit this course” lightbox. So, I thought I would be smart and add another trigger…. on “yes” button click, trigger to close the light box, then under the same button the very next trigger (same button click) Exit Course. It is only executing the very first trigger….and I don’t see an easy way to have both command execute simultaneously.

So, the exit course command has another action built into it to ask if the learner wants to resume where they left off. The problem is that it resumes with my lightbox asking if they are sure they want to exit the course .. hah. Gotta love it.

Suggestions?

Wilhelm Burger

I would like to keep the resume functionality. The problem is that when they click yes to exit, the browser window doesn't close. It has technically exited the course, but does not close the browser. Therefore, they are allowed to continue if they like without restarting the course.

I would think that it would display something like "you may now close your browser window", or simply close it. The story file is too large to post...is someone willing to look at it if I invite them through the SCORM cloud?

Ah, thanks Wilhelm for the clarification. The exit course button or trigger are something that could run into browser or specific LMS issues as you'll see detailed a bit further here.
