New Storyline Updates - Slide Notes Issue

May 08, 2015

I just installed the new updates (5 ) and opened one of my courses but now have an issue with the slide Notes tab. All of my slide notes are now in WHITE font and the notes background is GRAY.  Prior to the udpate the font was black with a white background. What do I need to do to change font back to Black WITHOUT having to touch each and every slide?  We print these notes for our instructor guides.

See attachment for a screenshot example of the notes.

Thanks!

We just did a recent upgrade (due to being unable to preview) and now I am having the exact same problem.

Notes text made before the update is black in the Notes section and white (as desired) in the Player.

However, now any new text added to the Notes section is black in the Notes and the player.

If I want it to be white in the player, I have to change it to white in the Notes section, which makes it illegible in the editor.

What the heck? It didn't even change the Notes editor background; if it had, the notes section would be dark gray like the player.

The result is, I can't see my Notes at all in the editor, only when previewing or publishing.

This is horrible.

I just tried Christopher Cox's suggestion, and I am able to change my text to a legible color throughout - some benefit. HOWEVER, the Player > Colors & Effects > Show advanced color editing > Edit item: Editor setting does give you the option of changing the background color. It appears to be set to white - but it doesn't show as white, and it can no longer be changed. Why is that disabled? It would solve a lot of headaches if that choice were restored to us.

Just sayin' . . .

I'm glad I'm not the only one finding this frustrating!

Our player colors are set with company branded colors so going in and changing the colors is not an option for me, and I would assume others have the same issue. Having to go and change the color in the editor for the notes on EVERY slide is too labor intensive considering the amount of courseware we have and I don't consider a USER-FRIENDLY fix at all.

I don't see why the notes in EDT mode need to display the player colors. Is there a reason the notes can't just be black or gray text on white background and then convert to the player color settings when published? You don't see the player colors anywhere else in Storyline while in EDIT mode. WHY is this any different? I wish someone would explain.

I LOVE working in Storyline and the Updates made are usually very good and helpful! However, this particular change has NOT been a good one at all!

Hi EP and Rob,

This is still currently considered by design, but we're always to hear more user feedback in terms of how you'd prefer it to be based on the use of the player feedback and how the notes described as mentioned here.  Please feel free to continue to share here and keep with our Product development team by sharing information with our team directly.

Slide Notes changing color once published.

This post started over a year ago and we are looking for resolution.  We are having the same issues.  Black text will not work...colors such as green will.  It doesn't appear as if there are clear resolutions.  Not only that, these colors will change each time we publish.  We just upgraded to Storyline 2 and this is unreal and disappointing to still see these blogs unanswered.  This should have been an easy patch going out for all to download...

Any timeline on this fix?  Thanks.

Hi Rachel,

This post started in regards to a change in behavior from Storyline 1 to Storyline 2 and how the notes formatting was handled. You'll see this described here in terms of how to format the notes and why the change occurred. As I mentioned some time ago to EP and Rob above, it's something that is by design right now.  If I'm misunderstanding what you've run into, please let me know. It may be easier if you're able to share some screenshots or a copy of your .story file and you can also send it along to our Support Engineers directly by uploading it at this link.

In reading through this and having many of the same issues I'm a bit disappointed in Storyline. I simply want notes text to be black or auto. When I change one slides note color other slide note colors change to white. When I go into advanced player settings for text and make necessary adjustments to all notes pages it still doesn't work. It's very frustrating that something that should be so simple is so complicated and doesn't work. I have spent over an hour troubleshooting a quirk that is wrong with the software with something fundamental as font color.

Hi there Jake,

If you want to make a change to the Notes font color, you can do that directly in the Notes tab within Edit mode. Are you saying that making a color change there affects the Notes text color of all other slides? Have you made a change to the Notes background color in the Player Properties, or is it the default gray color?

It would be helpful if you could share your .story file here so I can see what you're seeing on your end. You can use the Add Attachment button at the bottom of the reply window.

Like others I've done both. I change slide 1.4 to black then slide 1 changes to white. If I go to player properties advanced settings and change text to all black it doesn't stick. When I think I'm in the clear and then publish it goes back to white. Super strange. I had to create a brand new project and recreate each individual slide. I'm out a few hours of work but found a workaround.

Thanks for reaching out. One thing is for sure is that Storyline has great customer service. I think the problem still lies within the software itself, there are glitches in notes font color. It probably doesn't happen enough to prioritize a change and update.

Yes, that is really strange. I hear your frustration, especially since you had to recreate every slide. If this ever happens again in the future, you may also want to try importing the project into a new file, as that can sometimes fix hard-to-explain behavior.  Also don't hesitate to reach out to our Support Engineers - they're available 24/7 and are happy to work with you one-on-one to investigate further.
