Newbie needing help editing a tabbed template

Jul 17, 2015

Hi!  I am BRAND NEW to Storyline and using it for my HS drama classes.  I downloaded a great tabs template and have edited it to my content, but am having issues.  When I click on any of the tabs, I can still see the base layer.  I think maybe I need to do an exit trigger?  I just have NO IDEA how to do it.  I received about 2 hours of training and am attempting to be self-taught on pretty much everything else :)  I am sure there is a great tutorial out there, I just need help finding it!

Hi, Mari, and welcome to the community! :)

I'm glad to see that Joe has been able to assist, and you are welcome to share your .story file here if you would like us to take a closer look. You'll just need to click the ADD ATTACHMENT button in the bottom left corner of the reply box here in the thread, and please note that if you reply via email, your attachment will not appear here.

Mari,

just add a trigger that reveals the layer when you want it to, either when they click, timeline starts or something like that.  or, you can copy the background from the base layer and past it into the new layer.  I hope I am making sense here, like Christie said you can put your story. file here and I can take a look at it.

Mari,

Ok i won't fix it for you, but I think the best way to fix this is to copy what you want see onto the  subsequent layers.  Then go ahead and hide the base layer.  This should do what you need, if I am understanding your issue.  I also found a tutorial, click on here at top the hyperlink was not working, hope it or I have helped.

Mari,

Your presentation is in great shape, it doesn't need to be fixed. You just need two things. One is to get the original out of the way.  I went to STORY VIEW, right-clicked on the screen and chose Create New Scene. Then I dragged the slide 1.1 to the new scene. That way it isn't lost, but isn't part of your show. Or you could just delete it. I think you have everything you need from it.

When I did that and previewed, I thought your tabs and layers worked wonderfully.

The other is to start in the right place. I would put a trigger on the base layer to show the Home Buttons layer when the timeline starts, and I think everything will work like you want it to.

If you want the user to go back to the Home Buttons layer (beautiful work, by the way), you could put another tab (maybe on the left page) labeled go to  main menu (Home Buttons Layer).

If you have time, you might want to put the names on the tabs, instead of just numbers. Edit the state of the tab, and enter the name. You may have to turn the text to vertical.

Where I am stuck now...

I changed the names of the tabs on the base layer via states, but still see the #s.  Is there a quick way to fix this (without going to each and every layer and fixing it)?  I also put a "home" tab, but cannot get the trigger to "show the base layer."  Ifs there a way to do that?  Also, the first tab is always teal when I preview (never dims).  Other than those little things, I think it is almost ready to publish unless anyone else has some great tips!

Mari,

You see the names because they are on the base layer. You see the #s because they are on the layers, and those tabs aren't really needed. Use the tabs on the base layer to switch to each of the layers. Then on each layer have a tab to switch to the home layer. Because the base layer can handle it, the individual layers don't need tabs to the other layers, but each of them needs a tab to the home layer.  I suggest 4 steps:

1. Go to each layer and delete the  tabs. The tabs on the base layer will do most of what you need.

2. Go to the base layer and change the triggers on the Elements of Plays tab

add: Change state of tab 1 to normal when the user clicks  (it will default to tab 1 1) This will prevent them from staying teal.

add: hide this layer when user clicks (it will default to tab 1 1). This trigger hides the current layer, which makes the base layer visible.

delete: "Selected"  state of Elements of Plays tab

Once it is all set up, you can copy it to the other layers.

3. Copy Elements of Plays (Tab 1 1) from the base layer and paste it on each of the other layers. Storyline is really good about pasting it in the same spot it came from, so it will be in the same position on each layer.  Then on each layer, change the trigger to match the tab # (on Theme layer, Tab 1; Conflict layer, Tab 2, etc.)

4. Delete Elements of Plays tab from base layer

Now the base layer has tabs that are always visible that show each of the layers. Each layer has its own tab that shows the base layer because it hides itself.

The changes you have made make me think you can do this, but if it is too confusing, don't hesitate to ask for more help.
