Newbie question about Storyline vs. Rise

Sep 05, 2019

Hi folks:

I'm an experienced instructional designer but usually hand off the storyboards for construction for e-learning . I'm finally getting that skill for myself. I'd like to do more SAM/rapid prototyping nowadays.

I just learned Adobe Captivate 2019 and when I went to use it found the fluid box thing very complex and clunky and all the templates pretty ugly. I was sad, because I usually like Adobe products. Oh well.

So here I am about to learn Articulate 360 as well.

My question is, for output, I need to design responsive learning in HTML5. I don't want my text to shrink to an unreadable size on small screens, so what do I do? Design one version in Storyline for desktop/tablet and then one version in Rise for smartphones?

What's the best practice here?

Any help is appreciated before I develop any bad habits :-)

Thanks!

The short answer is yes, that's what you'll have to do to avoid the issue you are talking about.  While Storyline 360 claims it's reponsive, it really isn't. It will scale down the screen and add a mobile friendly player. Rise is more responsive and will maintain image and font size as close as possible, but it's restricted as far as interactions and designs go.

If you want to build one course that is actually responsive, you may have to do some custom development.

Thanks for your answer Jerson.

Is this what designers typically do? One version for desktop/laptop larger screens and one version for mobile screens?

If so, do you upload them to an LMS under two separate course names (desktop and mobile for instance) and the learner chooses whichever one they want?

Any input is appreciated.
