First, I'm using the trial version until the PO goes through.
I know I could set this up as multiple slides, but I'm instead trying to do this within a single slide.
I've got four layers, each with different items explaining how to use the player. I've created "Show layer" triggers "when the user clicks the next button" on each layer's triggers list.
Are you using the Master Slide for this? There's a known issue with trigger execution from within layers on the master slide. If not, mind posting your file so we can have a look. Should be quick to get you sorted out.

No, not the Master Slide. Can't post the file due to internal blocks, but here's a screen capture:
