Next/Previous Only Work if Window is Maximized

Sep 04, 2018

Hi all -

My IT department has been receiving calls regarding a course we recently uploaded that was built in Storyline 360.  Many learners are unable to click the Next or Previous buttons unless the window is maximized.  The buttons are visible, but do not work.  This has been true in both IE and Chrome.

Any thoughts on what publish setting I set up incorrectly to make this be the case?  I've been reading through existing threads and haven't come across this specific issue being discussed - but it's 100% possible I'm not searching with the right keywords.

Thanks so much for your time!

Hi Mary!

Hmm, that's awfully strange. It sounds like the learners can see the Prev/Next buttons, but they can't actually click those buttons unless the window is maximized, is that right?

Tell me a little more about this course:

  • What version of Storyline did you use to create it?
  • Is your Windows display setting set to 100%?
  • Is the player set to lock at optimal size, or scale player to fill browser window?

Hi Alyssa -

Thanks for the response!

That's right; they can see the next buttons but they don't work unless the window is maximized.

The course was built in Storyilne 360, and I do install the updates regularly.

The course runs fine for me (I can't duplicate the error) but we've heard from several different learners over the last two days (maybe 20?) that they are having this issue.  I will ask our IT department to check what their Windows display settings are set at.  We're a franchise network, so every office has it's own setup that isn't centrally mandated.

The player is currently set to lock at optimal size; should I change that to scale?

I appreciate your time!

Hi Mary,

Can they see the entire button? I'm wondering if a piece of it is just outside the clickable area, if that's causing them trouble?

If you're using the Classic player, I'd keep it at Lock at optimal size, and I'd want to know what you choose between open the new browser window at optimal size or let it fill the screen on desktop computers

Also, let us know what your IT team says, that may at least help with testing!

Hi Ashley -

In some cases, yes, the entire button can be seen. I was able to replicate the error this morning. My IT team has sad that the zoom settings do affect the functionality as well as the course not being at full screen.  If a scroll bar appears in the window at all, the next buttons don't work.

I've been playing around with different publish settings in our stage environment this morning. If I publish to AICC and choose to scale the player, the next/previous buttons work perfectly on every screen no matter the size. The course also marks complete when you go all the way through it.  BUT, now it won't bookmark.  We always select "prompt to resume" - so I'm not sure why it isn't bookmarking.  I did try it in Chrome, Firefox, and IE, just in case.

So, I'm a little stumped. I've attached a screenshot of the player settings that were used in the version that is published to our production environment, in case that's helpful.

I appreciate your insights!

Hi Ashley -

It's still not working on my end, but I think there might be another issue in play specific to my computer.  Anytime I publish to SCORM, my LMS gives me an API error, but when my manager publishes the same file, she does not get an error.  I will update this thread when we get that part resolved to let you know if your solutions worked!  I appreciate your time and assistance!
