No content shows when I publish using TinCan API

Apr 23, 2020

Hello all, I am new to Storyline 360. I have published several trial versions of a course I have been developing including one on review 360. All have worked excellent however now as I am trying to publish the course using the LMS Tin Can API output option when I click view course after it publishes no picture comes us. I can see the player features but no slide graphics. When I publish the course with the menu feature I can see all the slides in the menu but still nothing but a black screen where the slide normally would display. If I publish without the LMS everything works fine. Any thoughts why this isn't working for me?

Hello Joel!

I appreciate you sharing these detailed steps with us! Let's see where the snag is.

Why does slide content not appear when publishing using TinCan API?

Here are 2 questions to get us started:

  • Which browser are you viewing the course in?
  • Are you only seeing this error in the LMS? If so, can you try uploading the course to SCORM cloud? You can find detailed steps here.

Please let us know your findings so we can continue investigating!

The whole point of using xAPI is so that I do NOT need to use an LMS - I am using an LRS.

The player opens and the menu is populated -  but there is no content.

Are you telling me that when you publish to xAPI it works? If so

1. Does it work locally?

2. Does it work from a server?

3. Does it need to be on an LMS?

Hi Instructional Design,

Happy to help here!

When viewing the published xAPI output for a course locally, we have seen some cases and have an active report where the content is blank. As we continue to look into this issue, it may be best to upload the course to the environment for which it was published. As an example, if the course is published for LMS, you will want to upload the course to the LMS and then test it.

With that said, is the course content appearing blank when viewing it locally? Is the same behavior happening when uploading the course to your LRS?

Hi all,

Good news! In the upcoming June 2020 update for Storyline 360, we’ll add a new launch file to Tin Can API (xAPI) courses so you can view them on your local computer before you upload them to your LMS. We’ll make the same change to Storyline 3 in a future update.

See this article for more information, and let me know if you have any questions!
