No Other Activity on slide possible if Flash is waiting on input?

So I have a story that is illustrating procedures.  The interactivity is within a small Flash file (per slide).  When a slide appears, flash is sitting the waiting for user input. Learners read the step and then perform it.  However, if the learner wants to return to a previous slide (using an on screen button, not built-in one in SL player), or any other onscreen button, SL will accept no other activity but to complete the input waiting in the Flash file. 

I'm not a Flash Guru...Is there something that I need to add my flash to prevent it from dominating all input within SL, or is there a SL setup selection not properly configured that prevent any other input but Flash?.
