Not able to record audio while recording screen

Feb 09, 2014

I am a Storyline convert (until recently I had been using Captivate... for about the past three years) and so far have been impressed with what Articulate brings to the table with Storyline. This is my first post... I hope my topic is worthy.  With all of the resources and great information found here, I have been able to find solutions to all of my problems... until now.  One of the primary reasons I locked into Captivate initially was that I work exclusively with Macs.  I am pretty sure my current problem is related to my platform.  I use the most recent version of Parallels for Mac, which includes the Parallels audio controller.  When I attempt to use Record Screen function in Storyline, I get no audio levels coming in.  I have been through a dozen or so articles/posts from others having a similar problem, and have tried everything (from configuring device in Parallels, to using Device Manager)... to no avail.  My need is pretty simple, just to be able to record basic narration while recording a screencast in Storyline.

The built in microphone works.  I've tested it in Mac mode; I have set up voice recognition in Windows... just to see if the microphone works with Windows... it does.  Just not when I am in Storyline trying to Record a Screen.

Thanks for any information...

Hi James and welcome to Heroes!

Were you able to look at these troubleshooting steps and check all the information on the Windows side?

You'll also want to check that you've disabled the shared profile within Parallels.  Have you determine if the issue is somehow specific to recording a screen? You could try just recording audio by going to "Insert -> Sound -> Record Mic" and see if that picks up the sound. If so, I'd suggest conducting a repair of Storyline.

Let us know how things are progressing after following those steps.

Thanks Ashley.

The insert sound within Storyline works.  Still no sound during Record Screen.

Shared profile was on... I disabled it.  I have gone through settings using Device Manager several times and still no luck.  I'm hesitant to mess with reinstalling Storyline.

Possible workaround? I believe I can I add audio to a screencast after the screen activity has been captured (inside the project). This doesn't solve the original problem, but it should allow me to accomplish my objective.

Thanks again.

Thanks James for checking that the regular record sound is working.

Since it seems specific to the record screen sound, I think that the repair is really the way to go right now. If you'd prefer to wait until after this project, then you'll need to use the method you mentioned of inserting sound after recording the individual the screen. You could also record within Replay, which is a free download with a Storyline license and then you'd be able to insert the screen recording as an mp4.

James: I feel your pain. I'm running Parallels and have run into audio issues during screen recordings.

I assume you are using the built in mic setting, and that isn't working. Have you tried using an external mic--e.g., any type of usb mic would be a good start.

Ashley makes a good suggestion above: download Replay and see if the issues persist. If you like Articulate, most of your screen recordings will be done in Replay anyway. And you can add audio files after the fact.

Let us know how it goes. --Daniel

I am having the same issue on a PC. I can record audio on all my other programs, just not storyline or Screenr. I have uninstalled and re-installed JAVA, ran a repair on my storyline install, uninstalled and re-installed storyline... and nothing works.

Added note - I am able to make recordings in Articulate Replay as well. But still am not able to use Storyline.

Hi all. I experienced the same issues when I first got Storyline the summer of 2013 using the mic port on my system. Opened a ticket with support. One thing led to another and I finally tried using a USB mic and everything has worked perfect ever since. It seems some onboard mic chipsets just don't play well with Storyline. Try a USB mic and see if you get different results.

Hi Steven,

When inserting a screen recording into slides as step by step mode, this is to be expected. Step-by-step slides display only the action-related clips of your original screencast.  As a result, the recorded audio would not match up to the individual slides if it were included.

Your audio will still be available in the original screen recording—in case you also want to insert it as a video on a single slide.
