We can understand that a master slide don´t "execute" things, but it´s not acceptable it can´t read variables. If you want to customize a menu with some conditions you have to put it in EVERY slide, because masters just can´t read variables. I´ve tried every kind of variable at different scenarios. Just don´t work. Thanks Articulate for giving me more 3 hours hard work to do it.
Can you explain a bit more about what you are trying to do? Generally, masterslides can "execute things" and can also display variables and respond to changing variable values. See attached a simple example.

Masters work fine with variables, perhaps you have a specific issue
