Not showing buttons with special characters in LMS

Sep 20, 2016

Hi,

We have an Articulate Storyline course that needs to run in one of our customer's LMS. The course player has been switched to Danish as language and the next button is therefore named "Næste" now. The special character "æ" is missing, when uploaded to the client's LMS. When we test in our own LMS and in Scorm Cloud, the "æ" shows correctly.

The LMS vendor is just telling my client that it is a course issue...

I find it strange that it can change the player characters. I read another discussion here on the forum with people having problems with special character in course title, and that this could be solved through manually typing in the character in the imsmanifest, but what can I do about my issue? Is the player texts placed somewhere, so that I can manually change/do something?

Hope for your help on this matter. Thanks in advance.

Hello, Rene.  It sounds like you did the right thing to troubleshoot this weird character issue in the LMS environment.  You sort of alluded to the fact that, since it works in your LMS and in SCORM Cloud, that it is not a course issue (even though the vendor might be telling your client that it is).  I would agree with you-- we consider SCORM Cloud the reliable testing engine that we would use to figure out where the problem is.

We can't support modifying the published output, but that's not to say that other community members haven't experienced and/or fixed a similar issue.  Hoping that somebody will come in to help with a workaround!

In the meantime, if you can urge your client (or if you can, yourself) to work with their LMS support team so that they can investigate a little more deeply as to how they interpret the Storyline Player text, I think that's your best move.  You can share the SCORM output with them as proof that the course does work in an LMS environment, just not theirs.

Hi Crystal,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I have found a solution with the client where we delete the texts on back/next buttons and just have the arrows :-)

But good to know you agree with my investigations :-) If someone has experienced similar issues in their LMS, it would be good to know if there are any work arounds though. But I have worked with many LMS's and have only seen this issue with this single LMS though.
