Welcome to the community. I am not seeing a 0 either in preview or publish. I want to first confirm that you are working locally as described here. Have you seen this before? You could also share the file here if you would like us to take a look.
Even though this is an older thread, it is useful information when searching for this problem. If you change the name of your variable, SL2 automatically enters a 0 as a placeholder. For those branching assessments, this can be challenging to find the correct numeric variable in the long list, but if you must have a clear field when returning, leave the variable with the SL assigned name.

which version are you using. In SL2 even though default in the variables list is 0 I am not seeing a zero on screen when previewing or publishing
