objects not resetting to initial state in pick many

Jun 30, 2012

Hi,

I'm trying to create a pick many question but am having the problem that after the learner has an incorrect attempt and returns to the base layer the buttons do not return to their initial state. I have set the revisiting tab in the slide properties to 'reset to initial state' on all layers and it does reset if I go to a different slide and then return but not when I return to the base layer. I have attached the slide I'm struggling with. Any suggestions would be very gratefully received as I need to use this format at several points in my story.

Thanks,

Rebekah

Very odd...

I would have expected this to work, but I see what you mean.

It DOES reset to initial state when revisiting, (i.e. if you go to the next slide, and then go back as you say, so that is doing what it "says on the tin"), but I would have expected it to reset the STATE of the buttons to Normal from the Selected State.

I tried to set up "Set State of Button A/B/C/D/E to Normal when User clicks Try Again", but cannot yet figure it out...

There's probably something completely obvious we are both missing here!

Hi Rebekah,

This is either a bug or perhaps this type of question was designed to function this way so the learners can see their incorrect choices (and not make the same mistake twice?).  I did notice that the user can just click on any answer to deselect it, so they are able to change their answers easily and resubmit.

If you want something that works now, the Multiple Response question type resets all the answers automatically if you get it wrong. Of course you lose your ability to format the buttons - but it works just like the Pick Many.

Hope this helps!

Hi all

I'm experiencing a very similar problem and used the Jump to trigger to reset to the initial state. However I was only allowing the users 3 attempts to answer the question. Doing it this way now puts them in a loop as it resets the number of attempts back to 1.

Any other ideas as to how to overcome this problem?

I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Shelley

Hi Shelley,

Where are you adjusting the variable? You may want to adjust it on a layer or a blank slide that the user would be brought to prior to revisiting this slide. You could set that additional slide to "adjust variable when timeline starts" and then "jump to slide the slide you'd like to replay" when the timeline starts to allow it to bypass very quickly. You'll want to make sure that the variable trigger occurs before the jump to slide trigger to allow everything to fire as expected.

Becky has a tutorial here on resetting a drag and drop, with a limited number of attempts - you'll want to use a similar method for your question as well.

Hi Rebekah

What about setting the trigger on the Try Again button to Jump to Slide and then selecting that slide (kind of like it goes around in a loop).

Blair

Ah yes, reset state does not kick in when switching layers! Had I know that. Great tip, it means that I should always jump to this slide rather than hide layer if I want the state to reset when visited.
