Obstacle Course within Module

Mar 23, 2016

We've created an obstacle course within an eLearning module. Each scene has questions/interactions that must be completed in order to see if your avatar can successfully complete the obstacle or not (monkey bars over mud - either they stay dry or they get muddy - they move forward either way).

We put the obstacle animations on a results slide at the end of each scene. We are not concerned with the data from that results slide being communicated with the LMS - it's simply to help direct the animation.

When a user completes Scene 1 and its obstacle (pass or fail), they move forward to Scene 2. If they are in Scene 2 and navigate backwards (via Prev or Menu) to the questions/interactions in Scene 1, the Submit buttons have changed to Next buttons and the end users cannot manipulate anything on the slide.

All slides are set to return to initial state upon revisiting.

We have tried adding the trigger 'Reset Results when user clicks next button' on the results slide at the end of Scene 1 (normally tied to the Retry Quiz button). This did not change any of the behavior.

Any other ideas?

Hi Tiffany!

Once the interaction has been submitted, then when the user revisits, they are in Review mode.

You will want to allow the user to 'retry' the quiz via the setting on the results slide.

Your other option, if they are allowed to change their answer is to utilize Submit All, but it sounds like that will not work for your project.

Leslie,

Yeah, the end user doesn't 'know' they are on a results slide. We just use it to direct them to the right animation - if they passed the questions, their avatar gets through the obstacle (shown on pass layer of results slide). If they failed the questions, their avatar struggles through the obstacle (shown on the fail layer of the results slide).

So, the only way they can go back and retry the questions is to navigate directly from the results slide?

Hi Tiffany! Well, I don't think there is just one/only way to do anything in Storyline, but that is the standard. You could still put the option on the layer you wish. You simply need something to reset the results (so it's not in review mode) to allow the user to retry, but I'm not sure how (or if) this would affect subsequent navigation in your course.
