Open a PDF from a button onscreen directly into Acrobat

Nov 18, 2013

Hello Heroes! I was wondering if anyone has ever linked a button to open a PDF directly in Acrobat? I've done some research and I've changed settings in my browser and in Acrobat, but once published to Storyline, the PDF still opens in IE (which isn't evn my default browser.) I need the PDF to be editable once opened, and the tools are greyed out when it opens in IE. I think I've tried everything. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Jennifer,

I don't know if this solution would work for you, but you'll find an example here from Michael that allows the user to print and save the PDF right from within the Storyline window. The ability to edit a PDF will depend on what your users have access to (Adobe reader vs. Adobe Pro) so I thought this option might give you a nice way to have them save the PDF and then be able to edit it if they have the correct Adobe program.

Hi Ashley!

Thank you for your response. I did happen to see Michael's thread yesterday when searching for help...it's not quite what I'm looking for (I have several PDFs), but I appreciate the suggestion! I've discovered a workaround for now, but I'd like to keep looking to see if there's a way I can fix this moving forward.

Here's some background and my fix:

This is OJT training and my users will have tablets with them that have Adobe Reader and Pro installed on them. What I've managed to do is disable Adobe add-ons in IE with the help of this article. I also changed settings in Adobe Pro under Internet, making sure "Display in web browser" was unchecked. Now, when users click the button within Storyline, a pop-up dialogue appears asking if they'd like to Open or Save the file. Selecting Open will open the PDF in Reader (not Pro, unfortunately), but it's editable due to the settings I chose for the PDF itself.

Thanks again for your response, Ashley!

Hello, is there any other work-around to have a PDF open directly in Acrobat (or reader)? I have a fillable offline form (key word.... OFFLINE) and users are getting an error message when clicking the PDF via the Resources tab. (users can use the 'download' file option when they get this message) however, why if this PDF has been added as 'file" in the resources tab, it's still opening in a browser? I understand it is the individual users browser settings, however our browser settings are controlled by our IT department.  Couldn't Storyline just incorporate an option to download like any other file type? i.e. does not automatically open in browser?

Thanks for reaching out, Lindsay! You're correct; this is dependent on browser settings. I'm hopeful that our community members will chime in with ideas, but I did want to share these discussions that might help you come up with a workaround:
