The problem I'm seeing at the moment is that I have a pdf Form which will not allow editing in Firefox. Therefore, I thought a workaround might be launching with Reader instead.
It looks like Phil has you covered here, and in regards to your problematic PDF, have you tried it in other browsers so that you could offer that as a recommendation to your users? You'll find the list of supported browsers here.

Hmm.. perhaps this is more difficult than I'd hoped.
All I'd like to do is click a button I've made and open a file with it's associated program.
this is to do with the browser, most will have associated players for content or will just download the content for the user to open
