Storyline 2 projects can be upgraded to Storyline 3, but Storyline 3 projects can’t be opened or edited with Storyline 2.

If they zipped the course - do you know if it's the .story file or the published output? The published output can't be open in Storyline (regardless of version) so you'd want to view it within a web browser after uploading to an LMS, web site, etc.
