You could set up a variable such as "pagenumber" and have each slide add +1 to the variable then use it in a reference on the slides.

That is a great idea, only issue is if the student clicks on previous slide. The number increases going previous as well as forward.

You could also have each slide set the variable to a direct number instead of adding +1, just set the trigger to Assignment = 1, 2, 3 and so on. 

I generally use Emily's second suggestion. For my slide template, I add an object to the slide that contains a few triggers:

• Set the variable pagenum to X when the timeline starts
• Set the variable pagetitle to X when the timeline starts
• Set the variable sbnum to X when the timeline starts

By attaching these to the object I can copy and paste to other slides as a "trigger function" pretty easily. Once all of the objects are on the slides, numbering or renumbering is really pretty fast using Story View. I can renumber a 100 slide story in under 3 minutes. Would be better to have something automated but this really isn't tough to build or update.

Does option #2 from Emily change at all with branching? If we don't know where the user will jump next, we're not able to assign absolute values to the slides.

Welcome to the community. If the user can branch to different slides, the option to assign an absolute value may not work. You may need to use the +1 option so that no matter where they jump to, it will add a number to the page. I guess it would depend on your use of the previous button, and how you have the restriction set up for advancing through the slides.

The Slide Numbers won't automatically appear in the Menu of the Player. Not to worry, you can add in the Slide Numbers so they're displayed!
