Pasting images causing freezing

Sep 27, 2019

Hi all,

Hoping someone may be able to assist with a current issue i have. I've recently got a new laptop with windows 10, and now when i copy and image from a powerpoint presentation, and paste into a storyline file, it often freezes and doesn't repair itself. it's not every picture, and it's not everytime, just as and when it feels like it.

I've also noticed that since having the new laptop, the files now copy over as .emf. could it be to do with the new picture format, and can it be changed so they paste in as .jpg everytime?

Thanks!

Ugh, unfortunately I am also having this issue, and no objects are locked on my slides, so Sean Barry's suggestion doesn't really apply. My way around it is to save all my images locally and then insert them into the story. That seems to work without a hitch. However, this takes *much* longer than just copying and pasting. Is this a known issue that is being worked on? It's very frustrating, and I have lost work on more than one occasion because of it despite frequent saving.

EDIT: I did this https://articulate.com/support/article/How-to-Repair-Articulate-Storyline-360 quick repair for Storyline and so far so good. I've been copy/pasting for awhile now with no issue. If you are experiencing this issue it might be a good thing to try.

Hi Santiago,

I'm really sorry to hear that you've lost hours of work, and are considering leaving Articulate. It seems like this issue has been a constant for months now, and I understand the frustration!

I've started a case on your behalf to connect you with someone who can help with directly addressing these issues. They'll be reaching out as soon as possible!

In the meantime, here are the steps for finding a temporary file in case you need to recover something you've saved.

Here's how to check:
  1. Open this folder in Windows Explorer:  %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
  2. Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
  3. Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story
  4. Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

We'll do our best to help!

I am having the same issues. Here are the specifics:

  • Copying files from a pdf file
  • Text copies and pastes without problems
  • About 1 out of 10 to 20 tries, Storyline 360 crashes when pasting an object
  • I save OFTEN
  • It happens with all of my Storyline projects
  • I keep Storyline updated regularly (when notified by Articulate 360
  • File size does not seem to matter
  • Images used in the pdf files were referenced to .jpg files, but paste as .emf files
  • Using "Insert Image" never causes the problem
  • Slides are simple Title, Text box, with graphics inserted or pasted
  • Copy paste of graphics from any file type seems to cause the problem
  • Storyline always crashes at the same point - PASTE = CRASH

Hello Daniyal, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊

Thank you for reaching out and sharing that you are experiencing a similar issue. I was able to look at the support cases from some of the other community members here, and no underlying problem or single solution is identified.

  • Are you working locally, typically your C: Drive, with your software, project files, and assets?

Thanks for confirming, Daniyal!

I tested this, and I could copy/paste a character from PowerPoint into Storyline. I'm curious if you can insert the characters by importing the PowerPoint slides into Storyline rather than pasting them?

From here, I want to enlist our support engineers to investigate further. Are you able to share your files with us for testing purposes? We'll reach out soon with an update!

I realize this thread is years old, but it caught my attention when i decided to search for my issue... just in case there was a better solution to what i have been doing for those same years others here experienced it.

The way i *often* get past it (but not always) is to:

1) close the PPT app first.  But it doesn't properly close, so then

2) open the Task Manager and look for the PPT app in the "Background processes" and 'end task' on that background process.

This will typically then release the freeze that is happening in SL3 or SL360 (i've had it happen in both versions ... including today, Mar 2023, which prompted my search for something better).  Not sure why SL seems to lock onto PPT or PPT onto SL?

Hello Terry,

Thanks for sharing your solution.

I tried to replicate the issue on my end, but I was able to copy and paste images from PowerPoint to Storyline 360 without any issues.

If you're already working locally when copying images from PowerPoint to Storyline 360, try doing a repair of Storyline 360 to see if this helps. If the issue persists, open a case with our support team here so we can take a closer look at the behavior.

Hi Joe,

For sure, a number of you haven't been able to replicate; my comments were just for the benefit of people who are already experiencing the problem -that's all.  (it *is* happening to us, despite an inability to replicate).

I have had this issue under both SL3 and SL360 -it's not restricted to just SL360.  And in the suggestion to "repair", i'm in a corporate setting with substantial end-user lockdowns.  We have to log tickets and convince IT to do these things... not to mention, they would *NEVER* disable UAC even temporarily.  That typical "fix" approach won't work. (and doesn't explain why i see it in both SL3 and SL360 ... and only in its dealings with PPT, no other app --yet this same app in both SL versions?)

Which is all to say, thanx again Joe.  But i've already resolved to live with it, and was just sharing a tip that often helps me live with it.  Thanx again.
