Pausing Videos with HTML5 Output.

Jun 23, 2014

I'm back! after a week off, chasing pheasants, rabbits and other wild life in the British country side, I return to work to be assaulted with a problem:

Why do Videos play automatically in HTML 5 output, even if you set them to pause/stop on a trigger at the start of a timeline?

I would very much like to go back into the wild now.

Hi there Keith,

A couple of things;

  • How are you viewing the HTML5 content? Are you viewing this on a PC, or on a mobile device?
  • If you're viewing on a PC, which web browser(s) have you used to test this? Are you seeing the same thing in multiple browsers?
  • What type of video are you inserting into your project?
  • What version of Storyline are you using to publish? To find this information, click on Help >> About Storyline.

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

We are currently testing the HTML 5 output on the following; PC. iPad Air and a Galaxy tab 2

  • I have tested this on the iPad Air and on the PC and the problem occurs on both platforms
  • I have tested it on IE and Google chrome the PC and Safari on the iPad Air
  • We have used mpeg format, but we have also used AVI (I'm unaware what if the same problem happens with AVI files currently, but I will test it when I am able.)
  • We are on update 5 1401.2415

If you need any more details, please let me know!

Hi Keith,

Thank you very much for the additional information!

Are you able to share a .story file that contains some of all of these videos, so I can test on my end? Just keep in mind that the maximum file size for the forums is 20MB. If your project is larger than that, you may want to import some of the problem slides into a new project file.

Here's information on how to import into a new file:

Importing from Another Storyline Project - E-Learning Heroes

If you're unable to import, or you don't want to share the file here, please let me know and we'll discuss other options for sharing the project.

Best,

Christine

I have included on of the Problem Video/slides In its own story file.

There is no audio in the slide currently, but the way it should work is:

  • Stuff loads up
  • Option to click cow to start video

Works fine in Flash output, not in HTML 5. video starts automatically.

Just a note, Its not finished and the video will be changing soon.

Hi Keith,

Thanks very much for sharing your project file!

I took a look and I did see the same result in HTML5. I took a closer look and noticed a few things that may be causing the problem.

  • The "play media" trigger on your hotspot was duplicated. I removed one of these triggers.
  • There's a "stop media" trigger that's calling when the timeline starts - this made me curious as to why you'd want to use this.
  • I looked at the media properties for the video and saw that the video is actually set to play "automatically". I changed this to "when clicked" and removed the "stop media trigger":

I tested this in both versions and it seems to play correctly now:

Testing for Keith - Flash

Testing for Keith - HTML5

I'm also attaching the modified version of the file, just in case you'd like to take a look at this with the changes I made to the file.

Let me know if you still have trouble with this, or if you have any questions!

Best,

Christine

Hi Christine,

That's fantastic! I had a feeling there was an automatic play option, been working with storyline since I came out and I have never had that problem, nor could I find the option to turn off automatic play! Stuff you know

I have removed all the triggers that are not needed now and its working as expected, I will be able to finish course next week now!

Thank you very much!

Keith
