Persistent Slide State upon close and re-open course

Oct 09, 2018

Hi Guys,

First time asking a question on here so any help would be much appreciated.

Im building a 1 slide course. Basically mimicking a webpage with multiple external weblinks on it. Each link has an associated green tick icon next to it which is defaulted to grey. I've rigged it up so that when learner clicks on each link, the browser opens the link/asset in a new window/tab, and the green tick next to it lights up green(visited state). This all works fine.

Challenge here is I'd like to make whatever has a state of 'Visited' (clicked) remain GREEN after closing down the window and re-launching it. Is this even possible?

If I set up a variable for each of the green ticks, how would I save its values for when the course is next accessed (ie. closed and then relaunched) at a later time? Am I going down the correct path of thinking here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks in advance.

It's not a perfect solution by any means, but we've developed courses in the past that use a "save button" to achieve this. You click the button, it takes you to a separate slide that says "Saving..." and after about 0.5 seconds you're returned to the previous slide. Just navigating from one slide back to the previous will force Storyline to save all the variables and states at that point, allowing you to resume your progress if you exit.

It sounds like you could force the user to navigate away and back after each tick is revealed. If another window is opening you could do it almost instantaneously and the user shouldn't even notice.

Hi Ben! Thanks for getting back to me. Have tried this method and used Articulate Review as the testing platform - but every time I exit and re-launch, the slide reverts back to initial state (none of the ticks are green)... Perhaps this is something to do with Articulate Review - since I'm not set up as a learner, so it doesn't track individual's progress hence cannot 'resume' progress?

If it's something to do with Articulate Review then I should try this method on our internal LMS perhaps will yield better results.

Hey Zachary!

Great observation -- if you revisit or reload a course in Articulate Review, the course will always start at the beginning without reference to your Resume settings.

Testing the course in your learning management system is a great idea. If you find that the course isn't resuming correctly there, give us a holler! We can take a closer look at your file and help you pinpoint the problem.
