Pick Many - Recognizing Only the Latest Choice

Feb 06, 2019

I am trying to set up a "Pick Many" interaction where a user has the option to select a "check" or an "x" icon next to five different possible choices on the slide. Right now Storyline is recognizing both the "check" and the "x" as answered, if the user changes their mind and selects the "x" after selecting the "check" or visa-versa. I would like it to only recognize the latest answer of the two choices. Is that possible? I have attached one of the slides below, so you can see more of what I'm talking about.

Hey Christa,

First off, I love the way you designed this slide! This is a fantastic example of thinking outside the box and using a freeform quiz slide to create an ungraded interaction. 🌟

What the learner sees on the Results layer depends on True/False variables. However, this causes an issue if the learner selects an option, then changes their mind and selects something else.

Instead of using variables, change the state of the checks and x's on the Results layer based on the states of the objects on the base layer.

Have a look at the changes I made in your file, and you can test the published version here!

Hi Christa,

You could use this slide as a graded activity, too! Just keep in mind that that the answer will be all or nothing. In other words, the learner will get 10 points if they select all five correct answers. If they select four or less correct answers, they'll receive 0 points.

Also, there's nothing you need to do to make this a graded slide. Simply add a Result Slide after the questions to calculate the total score.

So, what I'm running into on that, though, is that it doesn't recognize that the answer has changed when the result slide comes up. This one is easy to see it on, because all the correct answers are checks. If I select all "x's" and then change it to "checks" on the result slide, I still get it wrong.

Hi Christa,

I think you're referring to the Results layer you've created, but I don't see a way from that layer that the learner would retake the question to change their answers. That layer wasn't showing as the trigger was bringing the learner to the Results slide itself, and there was only an option to Review there, not Retry the question.

Can you share the steps that you'd expect a learner to go through and how they'll navigate through this slide? It would help if you can also take a Peek of the process. You can include the "Share" link here in your reply.

Hi Ashley,

I really appreciate all your help with this. We weren't wanting them to change their answers after they saw the results layer. We just wanted the results layer to show at the very end of the quiz whether they scored 80% or higher on the entire quiz after they'd gone through all of the slides. It wasn't picking up on the fact that a slide was answered correctly once the answers were changed before clicking next, and I was hoping it could do that.

Hi Christa,

Thanks for that clarification. I made a few adjustments to your file that I think will help:

  • Renamed your layer to "Review" so that it would be picked up as a part of the course review
  • Set the question slide properties to "Resume Saved State"
  • Moved your continue button to be visible on the Review

Take a look - as this is working correctly for me now  in that:

  • I can change my answer on the slide before submitting and that's reflected on Review
  • I can see the Results slide and your Review layer (previously called Results)
  • I can now navigate throughout both slides

Let me know if I'm missing anything!
