I used pictures as my navigation
buttons, I've set the triggers to jump to the next slide etc. The
problem I'm having is when I'm on the 3rd slide (for example) and click
the previous button to go back to the 2nd slide the forward button
dissapeared on the 2nd slide. Is there something I'm missing?

Check the triggers to make sure there aren't two triggers on next / prev buttons that may be conflicting. Also check the states of your picture buttons that they aren't set to hidden or disabled maybe.
I see you added yours to the master slide to work. Is there a way I can get this to work without adding it to the master slide? Sorry tried again to add a file, but still no luck.
If you've added them to every slide manually, it should work the same as how Wendy added them to the master.
Also, the forums have around a 20 mb upload limit, so it may be that your file is too large to upload here - can you strip it down to just a few slides to help us see what you've got set up?
I've had the same issue but with image buttons that are used to open lightboxes (click on the Resources button on attached file). Once clicked, the Resources button disappears. I added a visited state in the hopes that would fix the problem but it did not.
not sure what is happening with your 'image buttons' I replaced the References button with my pic and triggered the lightbox. The image is still there when the lightbox is active.
I did it much simpler few slide, yet still I have the same problem that the buttons dissapear. The page returns to the saved state, and the buttons have only a hover and normal state.
I see you removed the hover trigger, yet it still works. Amazing! I went on a 3 day course on how to use Storyline, and I keep finding that it didn't even come close to covering all the little niggly bits. :o)

here is the story file again with the pic nav buttons removed from the slide master and added manually to each slide and the triggers added.

The hover state is a built in SL state - you don't need to add triggers to 'change state to 'hover'...so I removed all those from the trigger panel.
