Play button appearing when activity should just start

May 09, 2018

I need some help from the experts. I have an activity that was created with SL2. It required updates and so I upgraded it to SL360. Now when I publish this activity and put it on a server, I'm prompted to click a play button rather than the activity opening and playing right away. I've searched all of the settings and I can't find anything to indicate that I've got something set wrong. When I publish the activity and select "View Project" I don't see this. But if I put it into Review or load it up, I see it. I'm attaching a screen shot. The link to view the activity is: http://ihtc.unmc-cne.com/modules/18CE080/v1/story_html5.html

I'm also going to include the SL360 file. Do you think this is an issue related to upgrading the activity? Or am I just completely missing a setting somewhere?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Follow up Note: If for some reason you still see a Play button, the workaround has been to insert a title slide with no media on it and then let it automatically go straight to your beginning slide.

I published and tried your file "as is" with the HTML5 publish setting and it played fine for me. No Play button showed up in Chrome or Firefox.

Hey Anji!

Really appreciate you sharing your file with us. I see you have audio on the first slide.

Google changed the way media is handled in Chrome 66. Chrome now requires the learner to "click" on the page to allow audio to play automatically. The "play" button you're seeing requires the learner to click, which in turn allows the audio to play.

The good news is, learners may stop seeing the play button as Chrome's Media Engagement Index (MEI) learns that they allowed audio to play on previous visits to the same site. When that happens, audio will automatically play as it did in earlier versions of Chrome.

Let me know if you have other questions about that!

Hello, I'm having combinations of users encounter the play button, but nothing is happening when they click on it. We use both IE and Chrome; most of my folks have had success by loading it up in the other one that they weren't using when it first presented the play button. However, I've run into someone who it locks up for on both browsers.

Any ideas why this would happen for some and not for others?

Hi Robert, welcome to the community!

Sorry to hear your users are getting stuck. The content should play normally after clicking the play button, and the play button should only show in Google Chrome (not in Internet Explorer).

What version of Storyline are you using? Are you on the latest update of that version?

Also, is the published content hosted on a learning management system?
