Player going from locked to free after course completion?

Sep 09, 2019

I got a question from one our users that makes sense from a user standpoint but I am not sure the system is capable of this.  He would like for the player to go from "locked" to "free" upon course completion in our LMS.  Our users typically can go to their completed courses for review.  There are compliance reasons as to why the menu is locked when the user takes the course.  We have contacted our LMS provider as well for a possible solution.

There are actually 3 options, FREE, RESTRICTED or LOCKED.   Based on your question, it sounds like you want to choose RESTRICTED.

  • Locked—This prevents users from navigating away from the slide they're viewing, until the slide is finished. When the slide does finish, the user will only be able to move forward, not jump back to a previous slide.
  • Restricted—This prevents users from navigating to any slide ahead of one they're currently viewing. They can, however, jump back and forth amongst previously completed slides.

Navigation In Storyline

We had originally tried that but we had a "main navigation" menu in there that would take them down a pathway then back to the main menu.  They got smart and learned that they could "skip" slides and go back there and take a different route.  The main issue there is I need for them to see everything so they course completion was set to the # of slides viewed.  They did not get credit until they went back through them all.  I work in a regulated compliance environment so their menu is now locked.

What they understand now is that they go through the course as written but once it shows on their dashboard as complete they want the menu to return to free so they can go wherever they want in the course.

Hi - I have the same issue - and i'm here at at roadshow with the guys from articulate! very exciting to meet them .
do you have triggers to prevent the next button being active until the slide timeline in complete? is that how you are restricting their progress?

what they have suggested is using a variable that indicates that the slide has been completed.  I haven't had a try with it myself but hopefully i can work it out!

Yes- their next buttons are restricted by triggers for the interactions.  We do use variables to control the main menu so yes, that part works well.  The course has branched pathways from the main menu.

The player navigation is restricted by the player option status :  free, restricted or locked.  We were using restricted but now locked it because they figured out they can click on the menu items in restricted and go back to the main menu (the variable will change the state of that pathway to visited but they will have missed slides) and continue down another pathway to get to the knowledge check and "exit course" slide.  I attached a sample menu.

What the user understands is that it needs to be locked initially when they complete the course.  For use, the course will go into their LMS training history and they can go back and review a course.  At this point, they want the course navigation to be free.  I don't think that is possible.
