Player/ Preview Issues

May 24, 2013

I just downloaded the new version of Storyline.

I have also been playing around with the player colors and menus.

I have 2 questions:

1 - Is there a possibility for the Player to change depending on which scene is playing?

I have 5 different scenes and would be interested in using different player options for each.

2 - I somehow ran into a problem where every time I preview a scene, each slide starts out at the end of the timeline instead of the beginning. When I hit 'replay this slide' (or even when I preview the slide by itself) then it runs normally. Anyone know how to fix that?

Cheers,

M.

Hi Mariana:

Click the following link to learn how to change the player options on a slide by slide basis as well as resetting the state of a slide when revisiting it:

http://community.articulate.com/tutorials/products/controlling-a-slide-s-advance-behavior-and-other-slide-properties.aspx

Once the page is open scroll down to the heading "Player Features"

This should help you a great deal.

Thank you Dennis!

That link actually taught me how to edit player options for all slides in one scene, which is very useful! Thanks for sharing.

However, my original question is a bit more complicated than that, so I thought I'd give you more detail, in case you have input on this as well:

When looking at the Player options where you can decide if you want a menu on the side or the glossary, etc -for the default player, I found that you can add a topbar that could be very useful for navigation.

My question is: Can this topbar change depending on each scene? So that my navigation can change depending on each scene as well, assuming I wanted to use the topbar option instead of developing it within the slides.

Also, my preview issue remains. I went ahead and made sure all slides 'revert to initial state', but it's not really a problem when REVISITING at all, it's a problem when Previewing it for the first time.... Unless I hit 'Replay this slide' it doesn't start.

Let me know if you think there's anything else that could be interfering with this.

Thanks for your help!

Hi there M.,

For the player question, unfortunately the answer is no. You can choose whether or not you want the menu displayed in specific slides or scenes, but you cannot display the built-in menu differently in different sections of the course. If you really want to have this type of functionality in your course, maybe building your own menu would be an option.

For the second issue with the timeline - that sounds pretty strange. It's starting every slide from the end, unless you refresh/replay the slide, correct? That's pretty unexpected behavior.

Can you first confirm you're working with local project files, please?

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Try creating a new, blank Storyline file with a few slides and/or layers. If you preview the new file, does the same thing happen?

If not, are you able to post the .STORY file here, so I can take a look?

Thanks!

Hi there Mariana!

Thanks very much for sharing the file.

I'm not seeing the same thing on my end. I've tried previewing by simply using the "Preview" option (defaults to entire project), I've tried the preview options for "This Slide", "This Scene" and "Entire Project". All of them seem to be functioning properly for me.

When I preview all three slides, the content fades in as it's set up on the timeline for the project.

It sounds like it may be system-specific at this point. Can you please confirm you're viewing the project files locally, as I mentioned above?

Also, can you tell me what version of Storyline you're using, please? To find this information, click on "Help" and "About Articulate Storyline".

If you're not running version 3 (1305.2012), please download and install the update using the link below:

Articulate - Storyline Update 3

Once you've finished installing the update, please try previewing the project again and let me know if you see a difference.

Thanks!

Hello Christine,

Thank you for getting back to me. I am still experiencing the same issues - my slides won't start until I hit replay.

I am viewing my files locally & I am running version 3 (1305.2012). Actually, I didn't experience these problems until I updated my Storyline from the previous version (this was just a few days ago).

I went ahead a re-installed the latest version just in case - and it didn't fix the problem.

Thanks for looking into this!

Mariana

Hi Mariana,

Thanks for confirming that! :)

Quick question, what method did you use for reinstalling?

Please make sure you've taken the steps outlined in the following article:

Unexpected or erratic behavior in Storyline

Let me know if those are the steps you've taken, or if following those steps helps with the issue.

Thanks again!
