My client wants his employees to play his Storyline project across the network. In this case, he wants to use CD output from Storyline, place it on a network server and have his employees play it by clicking on the player.

That sounds like a solid plan! Publishing a course for CD will allow learners to view it offline from a network drive.
You'll want to zip your published output and copy the zip file to your shared network drive. Instruct learners to download and extract the zip file on their local computers, then double-click the Launch_Story.exe file to launch the course.
