Playing standard videos stored in Google Cloud Drive?

Dec 14, 2019

Hello all,

Can anyone tell me how to play standard (mp4) videos that are stored in our enterprise Google Cloud Drive?

A typical link is like: https://drive.google.com/file/e/9OGj2ajkui27gB1Zbo94EWu-E8clPQW/view

I have tried:

  • Insert > Video > Video from Website - but I get an error "... video cannot be inserted from this embed code..."
  • All options under Insert > Web Object >
    Such as: Display in Slide:
Results: A sad face icon with the message, "drive.google.com refused to connect"
Display in new browser window: Works but it first shows the web object, displayed with the words, "web object". The learner will need to click on the web object. Anyhow, this is not what I want. I really need the video to play within the LMS player.

I thought there was a way to accomplish what I need with an iframe function?

I am using Storyline 3 (with the latest updates).

Any ideas?

Thank you,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Happy to help here!

There are a couple of ways to embed a video from Google Drive into your course.

The first method is to download the video from Google Drive and store it locally (C: Drive). You can then insert the video using the Insert from File workflow:

Another option is to embed the video from Google Drive. For this workflow, we will want to obtain the embed code for the video and paste it into the course:

  1. Open Google Drive
  2. Locate the Video file
  3. Set the Share settings to Public on Web
  4. Then click on the "More Actions" icon (3 vertical dots) in the upper right corner
  5. Click on Open in New Window
  6. Click on "More Actions" in the new window, then click on Embed Item...
  7. Copy Embed Code and paste the code into Storyline using the
Insert >> Video >> Video from Website:

Thank you again for your support, Vincent.

The iFrame video embed worked almost perfectly. Meaning that it worked on:

  • Desktop, any browser.
  • iPhone - Chrome browser
  • iPhone - Did not work with Safari

I'm not currently certain why the embedded iFrame video doesn't work with iPhone's Safari, but that's probably another question, which I will ask. :)

Thank you! :)
