Please Help! I'm Not Sure What Is Happening

Sep 24, 2013

I've created about 3 courses with Storyline and everything has worked beautifully.  Yesterday I went to open a course that I was working on and everything looked fine in story view, but when I clicked on a particular slide, the background was missing, and it the audio never loaded.  The videos also failed to load.  I thought that I had messed something up, so I recreated the course.

Today, I went to open the new course, only to find the same thing happening.  The backgrounds show up in story view, but when I click on the individual slide, the background is missing, audio doesn't work...  All of my slides with videos also are not working.

Can anyone help?  I have two days left on trial and was seriously considering purchasing the program, but I have to figure out what is happening before I can make that commitment.

Thanks in advance for your feedback,

Karin

Hello Karin,

I might have some solutions for you.

1. Check your triggers list (both on your main slide layer and added layers) to see if something

doesn't allow you to see content or should allow.

2. Check your Video and Audio options if they start automatically, when clicked or start when activated by a trigger. To see if this is the case, select your Video/Audio and click on the Option panel (on top of your screen, next to View).

3. Check the Image1 below: This is to be applied on layers to be able to see the content of the base layer.

4. Check the Image2 below: Click the Settings button on the layers. If you have those options checked in your window, then this might be the problem.

Hope that helps!

Catherine,

Thank you so much for your detailed post.  I've checked all of my triggers and I didn't see anything that would hide the background.  The strange thing is I see it in Story view, but not when I click on the slide.  I don't have many layers, so I don't think it's a layer issue.

I am really perplexed.  Something is very strange, and I didn't try to do anything fancy

Although, I checked everything you suggested, I can't seem to find the problem.

THank you for your help!

Hi Karin,

It sounds like some strange behavior, and there are a few other items you'll want to check whenever working on Storyline.

  • Work on your localdrive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can causeerratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and otherunexpected behavior.
  • You should also makesure the directory path to your project files and your published output is lessthan 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using specialcharacters, accents or symbols in your file names.

If you continue to have odd behavior in Storyline, it may need a repair of the Storyline software as described here.

Hi, Karin:

If repairing the program doesn't fix things, I would delete the program off my computer, and call up Articulate, explain the situation, and ask if the trial can be extended, so you can download a fresh version. You can even point them to this thread as proof of the issues.

I'd be surprised if they didn't work with you. Articulate has great products: it'd be a shame if a glitch got in the way. --Daniel

Thank you everyone for your response.  I redid the course again for the third time and I was very careful about triggers...  It worked this time, although I didn't really do anything different, so not sure what happened.  If it continues I will definitely check with support.

Although, I don't know if I should start a new thread for this but...

Right now, I have a course for sale that is all video based.  It's a series of videos with pdf''s to go with each video.  I am redoing these lessons with Storyline to make them more interactive and engaging.

I asked one of the students who is taking the course to try one of the interactive lessons instead of the video lesson so that I could get her feedback.  She said that when she clicks on the link, she just gets a white screen and nothing shows.

It works on my computer, and it works on my ipad, but I'm not sure why it's not working for her.  I asked her to update flash and this was her response:

I tried to view the new interactive lesson on my laptop after unsuccessfully viewing it on my desktop last night.  I still get a blank white screen and I tried updating Adobe flash, but they said I had the latest version.  Not sure what else to do.

Any suggestions on what else could be wrong or if something else needs to be updated on one's computer?

Thanks again for all of the help.

Thank you Ashley for your reply.  I actually have the course posted on my website.  It's a private site only accessed via username and password, and I use Moodle.  I published for HTML5 and I can view it via the website from my computer, but for some reason she cannot?  If you want to take a look, I can give you access.

Thanks,

Karin
