Possible Bugs with Grouped Objects in Storyline
Mar 28, 2014
HI,
I'm not sure if these are bugs or if I'm doing something wrong, but I've had the following issues (Version 5 of Storyline):
1) Trying to save a grouped object behaves oddly. If I have a grouped object and try to save it as a picture, only one element winds up getting saved. I had to ungroup the objects, select all of the them, and then I was able to save as a picture.
2) Rotating grouped objects behaves oddly. I was trying to arrange smaller circles equal-distant around a larger circle. I tried to replicate the way I would do this in PowerPoint: I placed smaller circles at the top and bottom of the larger circle and then grouped the two smaller circles. I copied that group, aligned the copy with the original group, and then used the rotation option to arrange the grouped circles around the larger circle, the degree of the rotation determined by the number of smaller circles I have (I had 30 circles, so I rotated the first grouped copy at 12 degrees, the second at 24 degrees, etc: 360/30= 12). This just didn't work in Storyline. The grouped objects did not rotate properly, and one of the smaller circles just disappeared entirely. I wound up using PowerPoint and then importing the PowerPoint into Storyline.
I have workarounds for each of these issues, but I thought I would report them in case they are a bug.

Hi Joseph, I've noticed the first issue that you described. I have not tried to rotate grouped items so can't comment on that one.
I've also noticed other issues with grouped items - if you hide a group on the timeline and then show it again - the individual grouped items remain hidden. I have also noticed that if you move a grouped item along the timeline, the grouped items remain where they were originally placed (not sure if this is a bug or by design but it has tripped me up a couple of times).
Definitely the first issue you mention, Joseph, happens to me and I have to do the same when saving as picture.
I have rotated groups successfully, but haven't necessarily grouped in the way you describe.
And have also been tripped up by both the grouping issues you mention, Nancy, in your 2nd paragraph.
Has this issue been resolved?
I'm experiencing problems of moving grouped objects on a motion path, .i.e. rectangle moves, but circles placed on it and grouped stay static. This is in Storyline 2.
Hi Bhavna!
According to some conversation here, this works. Be sure that you are applying animation to the 'group' and not one of the shapes :)
I've had similar experiences with rotating objects that are part of a group. It's easy enough to save the individual objects to a group, but as soon as I try to move them, or more often, rotate them, I get a black screen. Even subsequent screens that do not contain the same group of objects will also turn black. I have to exit Storyline, sometimes even reboot my computer, to be able to go back into Storyline to see the slide again.
Hi Heather! This is actually something that our QA Team has been working on and should be coming in an update soon.
