Possible to build this sort of interactivity in Storyline HTML5?

May 20, 2014

Hi everyone,

My team is brainstorming for our next e-learning module. Each year we try to add an interactive exercise to drive home the main point of the module. In years past we've always used Presenter '09 and built these interactions as custom flash modules which has worked perfectly. However, this year the team wants the training to be iPad friendly, so I believe Flash will be out of the question. I plan on trying to build this year's module in Storyline for HTML5.

This year the team wants to build an interaction similar to this rough sample I've set up:

http://bit.ly/1qRSCqf

This would be the setup:

User gets to the interaction. Instructions tell them to click on all hazards, for example. An image comes up and starts to pan and zoom around. The user can click on certain hotspots in the image to determine which areas are hazards. If they click on a correct spot, a green check mark, or some indicator appears.

Does this sound like it would be doable with Storyline? I believe a still image would be possible, but I have no idea about a panning/zooming image -- or a video??

I wonder if anyone with more experience in Storyline would know?

I really appreciate any feedback!

Hi Amber,

Personally, I like the idea of making it a video - but that's just me :)

Also, is there a reason you're leaning toward HTML5 for the iPad? You could certainly publish the Flash version, if you created one, and view it on the iPad through the Articulate Mobile Player.

I'd recommend keeping this on had for your project, just so you can compare what features are supported in the different output types:

Compare Storyline's Flash, HTML5 and Articulate Mobile Player output

Also, I'm not sure if this will work for you, but it might be worth checking out the "Zoom Region" tool:

Inserting a Zoom Region - E-Learning Heroes

I'm sure others will chime in with their suggestions, but I hope this information helps get you started! :)

Have a great day,

Christine

Hi Christine!

Wow, thanks so much for this information! This is really helpful! I'll look further into the Articulate Mobile Player to see if this is something I could make work. Glad I asked this question, because I didn't know anything about that either!

And the Zoom Region looks very interesting. Looks like I have some good research to start with here.

I really appreciate your help and your time! Thanks a million!!

Wishing you a wonderful day as well!

Amber
