Powerpoint Video Doesnt Play in Studio 360 Preview or Publish

Feb 27, 2017

We have a WMF video that pays perfectly in PowerPoint and plays within the slide edit function of Studio 360.  However, it wont preview or publish. We can see the progress bar advancing but no playback.

Hi there Eddie!

Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you're using Presenter 360, since you mentioned you're using PowerPoint and Studio 360. Is that correct? Just double checking because you posted in the Storyline thread. :)

You'll want to be sure you're using the Insert Video feature from the Articulate tab, as opposed to the PowerPoint Insert tab. Also, here's a list of the supported video formats for Presenter 360. Have you tried converting the WMF to another format before inserting it in Presenter?

Yes
The reason we posted in the Storyline thread is because your option dropdown did not show Studio 360 as a posting option and would not allow a posting without selecting a product. You may want to check into that.

We tried inserting the WMF directly from the Articulate Add-in interface. No luck. WMFs are listed as compatible. It plays back in the editing screen --- not in preview or publish.

Before we attempt an alternative video format, is there one that is likely to be more compatible?

By the way, we are using Office 365 and the latest 2016 version of PowerPoint and our system is very high-end with all available CODECS and video drivers. We are a video production facility. We chose to investigate Studio and Quizmaker because we experienced issues with Storyline 360 not be able to handle complex animation sequences. We had hoped the Studio 360 option would provide the ability to accept our PowerPoint presentations "as is" and by-pass Storyline's interpretation of our PowerPoint designs yet retain the ability to incorporate a testing component via Quizmaker.

We re-encoded the video content using a CODEC that is widely accepted and speciific to Powerpoint as a WMF.
Now it will play in Review but still does not play when published. We can see the progress bar advance but no video. All audio narrations on other slides plays as intended. We loaded the video directly from the Articulate interface in PowerPoint

Hi Eddie,

Thanks for that additional information. And I apologize for the confusion in selecting a discussion thread. Instead of listing Articulate Studio which is a package of three products, we list Presenter, Quizmaker, and Engage separately.

I reached out to our Support Engineers on your behalf for their expertise on WMF compatibility, since they'll be better suited to make recommendations on that than I would. I'm glad to hear that the video is now working in Review, and our team will work one-on-one with you to pinpoint why you're not seeing the video after publishing. Keep an eye on your inbox for a message from Support@Articulate.com. You'll hear from us shortly!

Thank you.
We are a bit under the gun to get this resolved. We tried at least 6 different CODECS and we know we have the latest MIME sets etc. As I said, we are highly skilled at video editing and output. We even tried alternative browsers. The fact that your software can preview the video would suggest that it should be publishable.

Thanks, Eddie. I see that you're working with my colleague Vira, and that she has requested that you send a couple of the WMF files that are in the Presenter course for her to review. You can upload the zip files using this link that is unique to your case, and she'll receive them directly. Thanks for working with us to get this sorted out!
