PowerPoint Videos not Importing

Feb 16, 2016

I am new to Storyline and testing it out.  I teach American Sign Language, so videos are an essential part of my instruction.  I am trying to import a large PowerPoint file that has multiple videos.  None of my videos are importing, only my picture files show up.  Am I missing something?

Hi, Allie -- Thanks so much for you question! I wanted to follow up as I believe I may have misunderstood your query initially. You should be able to import your videos from PowerPoint into your Storyline 2 file. I did a quick test with a video in PowerPoint and then imported my PPT into SL2 without incident.

Please ensure that your are following the steps listed here for Importing Your Power Point content, and let us know if issues persist. You may want to also take a look at this information to rule out any common errors that may be causing you difficulties.

We would be happy to check out your Articulate Package and then attempt to import your PPT into Storyline on our end to see if we encounter the same behavior you have described.

I was so hopeful after reading this that I might have a solution.   The aspect of the "steps" that was suspect to me was the ".ppta" file.  I thought what I needed to do was take those specific videos and put them IN the same folder so as a corresponding resource it would be brought over on the import.  I tried...it failed again.   I am going to search and see what more I can figure out about the "ppta" file.  If any one can throw me a bone in the mean time I would appreciate it.

Hi, Allie -- Sorry to hear that issues persist! As I'd mentioned, it would be great if you could provide us with your Presenter files so we can attempt the import on our end.

Please follow the steps listed here to create your Articulate Package (which will be a zipped package that includes your PPT, PPTA, etc.) and if you would like to share your file privately rather than here in the post, here is the form you would need.  :)

Thanks so much Christie,

I think I have a foggy idea of what I'm running into here. I truly
appreciate your willingness to persist!

Let me explain a few things that might be of help. I own the studio 09
software. I recently tried 30 days of the '13 trying to decide if I wanted
to upgrade. As that was expiring, I spoke to one of Articulate's
representatives and she suggested I also give Storyline 2 a try. I am
giving you these details so you will better understand the challenge I am
running into when I try to share.

The zipping of files seems to be pointing me to Articulate presenter 13 and
that "trial" has expired.

I am certain the "zipping" of files in such a way that a package "contains"
my video and Articulate can reference it is the problem. If you could help
me on that aspect of the "steps" I think I can conquer this little
challenge myself. Is there a way to redirect my "zip" to articulate
storyline2? Is there an alternate way to "contain" the files and
powerpoint so it can reference those video files?

I may be WAY off on my understanding of the problem. If so, just redirect
me!!

Hi, Allie -- I think we may be onto something here! Thanks so much for the additional details and may I ask if your course with the videos may have originally been created in Studio '09 (and then you imported the file into Studio '13 during the trial period)? My thinking is, if you have a file from Studio '09 that contains the videos you want to import into Storyline 2, you should be able to import from Studio '09 into SL2 direct (or without involving Studio '13) per this section of the Sales FAQ sheet:

Can I import projects created in Articulate Studio products into Storyline 2?

Yes. You can import Articulate Studio ’09 and Studio ’13 content into Articulate Storyline 2. If you have Storyline 1, you can only import projects from Articulate Studio ’09.

Or, you may want to simply create a Studio '09 file, add just the videos you need, and import that into SL2, following these steps for  Importing Your Power Point content

Please let me know if that does the trick! :)

No. I did not use studio at all. It is just an instructional powerpoint
that uses a lot of video clips. I am trying to directly import into
Storyline2 to vet my ideas with my LMS. The problem is when I try to
"package" it for you, from powerpoint, the default seems to be taking me to
Presenter 13 instead of to Storyline2. I have completely uninstalled
Studio 13. Let's see if that will help.

OK- so now I have multiple files generated.

One is "Articulate Presenter" (2KB)
The other is the "Compressed" file package

I am playing with opening the presenter file now. I realized in order to
even open it to preview, it is now "publishing" it.

For review,

I took my instructional PowerPoint, selected the "file" tab and selected
"share". I then selected "Articulate".

This generated one "zipped" package and one "presenter" file.

Can you help step me through from here? I actually never even used the
"Presenter" software in my 09 package before, so I'm just uncertain what to
do next. I tried the traditional "import" from the Storyline2 side, but
realized the relevant files were not showing up in my list. I realized I
probably need to go from the other direction. I am testing that out now.

hopefully my question makes sense??

If the preview looks good, and my videos are functioning, what is my next
succession of steps? Also- which file do I then "link" into my LMS to test
it in that environment?

Hi, Allie -- My sincere apologies, but I am a bit unclear on what you have described. May I ask if you possibly have the video files you need to use somewhere independently from Presenter and you could add them into Storyline 2 directly using the steps listed here?

If not, what I was hoping to see is basically your Presenter '09 file so I can attempt to import it into Storyline 2 on my end. Here are the steps you will need to create an Articulate Package of your Presenter '09 file with the videos included:

Creating an Articulate Package
  1. Do one of the following, depending on your version of PowerPoint:
    • PowerPoint 2010: Go to the File tab on the PowerPoint ribbon, click Save & Send, and choose Articulate Package.
    • PowerPoint 2007: Click the round Microsoft Office button in the upper left corner, scroll to Send, and choose Articulate Package.
    • PowerPoint 2003 and earlier: Go to the File menu, scroll to Send to, and choose Articulate Presenter Package.
  2. When the Articulate Presenter Package window appears, choose a Package Location. By default, the zip file will be created in the same location where your PowerPoint file is stored, but you can change it. Just click the ellipsis (...) button, and browse to a different folder.
  3. Modify any of the optional Package Notes, and click Create Package.
  4. When the Publish Successful dialog appears, you'll have an option to open the folder where the zip file was created. Click Close when you're done.

Hi Allie!

Christie is out of the office today, so I'm trying to catch up on your conversation here.

The images you have attached are from Storyline I presume in sla.jpg and then the other is from Presenter '09.

What is the issue that you are running into? Are you working on the Storyline file or the Presenter file?

Would you be able to share so that we could take a look?

Allie Marino

Hi Leslie.  Actually one shows what the slide looks like in PowerPoint , while the other is from the Articulate preview.  I am happy to report I figured it out!  I had to edit my design ratio in Powerpoint and now it is resolved (until I figure out the next thing).  I am a bit of a kamikaze learner.  I dive in without knowing what the heck I'm doing.  I suppose it's my initial method of vetting how "intuitive" a program is to me.  Happy to say, I went ahead and started some formal training which is helping a lot!  Thanks so much for all the help!

My first thought was, oh, I had no issue importing that file.

Then I realized:

1. Storyline 2 is now on Update 13, so you may want to check that out here.

2. I have Office 2016 when testing, so I'm going to take a look to see if I have 2010 somewhere :)

In the meantime, not sure if the attached file will help you. You are welcome to share it with me directly here if you want the unstripped version imported. Just please be sure to include the forum url/link as well.
