When I'm viewing or editing slide properties or slide layer properties, the properties dialog box closes if I press the space bar. Am I changing any settings when I press the space bar there, or am I just closing the dialog box?
It depends on the tab order, and where you were when you hit the space bar. When you first open that dialog box, the focus is set to the OK button. If you tab through to a different location on the dialog box and hit the space bar, it will either toggle a checkbox or select a button or do nothing if you are on one of the dropdown boxes.
But the short answer is that if you open the dialog box and then hit the space bar, you are basically just clicking OK, and so haven't changed anything. If you have made some change, like just checking or unchecking a box, and immediately hit the space bar, it simply toggles that change, but does not close the dialog box.
