I could be wrong but if I recall, you have to strip out some player elements for this to happen. I just can't remember which right now, but I'm trying it now.
There used to be another workaround that allowed you to keep the volume and seekbar on and involved masking those buttons via a webobject that had the same background, but it doesn't seem to work anymore.
What type of change do you need to make to the buttons? As Alex mentioned, you could strip out all the other player elements to force there to be no space for them to appear, but if you leave those elements in they will appear by default as Storyline is recognizing that the user needs a way to navigate (doesn't see your custom buttons).
If you'd like to change what they say, you could modify that within the Player text labels.

Yup, volume, and seekbar have to be disabled.
