Preview in Player Properties shows differently in two modules despite using same templates

Nov 09, 2015

Hello!

I  have been building a few modules from a number of templates and created new ones on the way when required, using original templates as a starting point.

All was going well for the first 3 modules, but then I noticed that in my latest the interface on each slide doesn't fit correctly in the Storyline background.

I checked and compared the Player Properties of a previous module and the new one. For some reason the Colors & Effects settings were different so I set them to the same as the previous modules. It started making some appropriate changes but I can still see the default Storyline navigation buttons in the Player Property preview and there are still small margins between the custom interface layout and the edges of the storyline background.  I have look at the Slide Properties but the Prev and Next button options are unticked.  I really am at a loss now. Has anyone had a similar problem and solved it?

I have attached a document of screen grabs showing the Player Properties windows for each module. The settings are the same for each module so I really don't know where the issue can come from. If you compare the previews you can see the differences between the modules.

Many thanks for any help, advice etc....

Hi Fabienne,

Did you check that all slides are using the Player default and that they all have the built in buttons turned off? Even if just one slide had a button remaining, it would impact the player size for the course as a whole, as it's not adjusting at each individual slide. If you're still having odd behavior we'll want to take a look at the .story file.

Hi Ashley!

Many thanks for your reply! I was about to close down for the day after reading other discussions on the forum and there you appear!

So do you mean I have to check each slide property to make sure they all have their navigation buttons turned off? I will have time to do this tomorrow if this is the case. Also do I check if they all use the Player default in the Slide properties window?

Hi Fabienne -

I'm always coming back - just mostly here U.S. east coast hours. ;-)

The slide properties will be where you can see the navigational elements too and what player properties they're using (i.e. menu, seekbar, etc.) - so if you've turned them all off from within the player, but one slide had say the "next" button enabled it may be adding that space within the player across all the slides. If you take a look and don't find anything, we'll want to take a look at the .story file to see if there is anything we can spot. Sometimes just needs another pair of eyes.

Hi Ashley,

Back at work now as it is morning here!

I have checked every single slide in my module and all of them have the navigation buttons unticked and are set to use the default player. But before doing this I had deleted a series of slides I had kept in the file from a previous module as this module is nearly complete and I didn't need to reuse existing templates anymore.

I then did a preview of a few remaining slides, and amazingly they now are laid out properly. So I double checked the Player properties window and the navigation buttons are gone and the screen is laid out correctly now.

So I believe one of the slides at least from the set of templates I had kept on stand by in the file was creating a problem.

I am very grateful for your help as if this happens again I will know what to look for and where.

Again, one learns so much more by doing and meeting issues than going on a course ;o). Hence e-learning through scenarios, games, trial and error activities are so much more effective than tutorial based mainly e-learning.

Many thanks

Fabienne
