If you need to preview the audio on a slide, and you don't need to see everything else that happens on the timeline, you can use the Preview audio button in the Audio Tool Options menu instead of the timeline play button.
The audio will immediately play instead of making you wait like it does when you click the play button on the timeline.
Maybe even better in some circumstances: just double click the row on the timeline that represents the audio (Audio 1) and click the play button. Then if you need to make any trims or edits, it is right there. I'm impressed at how fast the audio editor opens.
