Problem in creating the story.html link to work on website
May 08, 2012
I have been have problem in getting my story.html link to work. This is what I have done.
1) I put the folder that Publish generates. I move inside that folder and create a link to story.html.
2) When I cut and paste that link into my web browser, it doesn't open the html but let me download the file.
I send an e-mail to the website provider and that said that the story.html will not be executed. There is a copy of that responds from them:
"You can store any file type in OpenDrive. However, files cannot be run within OpenDrive if they require an application or other files to run (in this case, the file has to be run by a browser). When you use a link to access the HTML file, it will be available for download but it will not open as a HTML page. If you would like to link to files (images, videos, mp3 files, etc.) you can create a page on your website and use the links for the files, but the HTML page will not load directly from OpenDrive."
Can you explain how I can make a link that works ?? or tell me what I did wrong ??
Thank You,
Gary

Gary,
It sounds to me like the provider (OpenDrive) doesn't allow you run a course from your storage drive. So there's nothing that you've done wrong, rather, it sounds like open drive doesn't allow the HTML to execute as it would in, say, a DropBox account.

So the requirement is to have a web provider that allows HTML to be executed.
Do you know of some other provides that will allow HTML to be executed other than DropBox ??
Thank you,
Gary
Gary,
If you don't mind getting a little technical....
Amazon's S3 service works really well for serving up Articulate courses. And for low bandwidth users, it's free.

I just tried using the Dropbox, and I got the link. When I copy the link on my IE 8, it shows me the actual code of story.html and it didn't execute it. Can you help tell me what I need to do ??
Thank You,
Gary
Hi Gary. If you follow the steps outlined in this screencast, you should be able to view your Storyline content and share the link with others:

I know that your tempshare website works with certain web browser.
I was trying to do the same thing myself in dropbox. I put my folder on the dropbox and make a link to story.html
When I put that link in the web browser, it takes to to the story.html, but it shows me the html coding of story.html and it didn't execute it. What do I need to do to get it to execute ?

Hi Gary,
It sounds like your content hasn't completely uploaded to Dropbox. It can take several minutes depending upon your internet connection for all of the required files to upload to Dropbox. Only after all of the files have uploaded will the content work as expected.
Brian:
Thank You for the information. I will leave the folder out on my drop box and wait. Do I need to be login for it to update ???
Gary
Gary,
Just to make sure...are you placing the content in your "Public" Dropbox folder?
I wasn't doing that. I will place in the public folder of the dropbox now.
Gary
Right. It needs to be in the Public folder per my screencast.
Thank You Justin & Mike:
I got it working in the dropbox !!!!
Gary
Glad we could help!
I was searching for an answer to the same question posted here & i followed the above steps. The problem is i'm not sure what a "Public Folder" on Dropbox is ? Where do i find it in my Dropbox? or do i need to create it ? That path: ...../Dropbox/Public is not available for me !
Hi Marwa!
The public folders do not come standard in a Dropbox account anymore. Please check out this article for details.
