Problem with MP3 audio in Articulate Storyline

Apr 15, 2015

On the courses developed on the latest version of Storyline (v2.4), we have observed that they are unable to run audio (mp3) files when consumed locally/offline (not over an HTTP server). When we try running the courses on the iOS simulator, the ReadyState property of the audio tag indicates a value of 1 (HAVE_METADATA) which prevents a successful run of the course. However, when the same course is consumed over an HTTP server, it works as expected – even on the simulator. In this case, the value of the ReadyState parameter is shown as 4(HAVE_ENOUGH_DATA). This leads us to believe that the courses inherently are expected to be run over an HTTP server but cannot be consumed offline. However, in the previous versions of Storyline (1.6), we did not experience this issue.

Is this (running courses over an HTTP server) a system requirement as part of the latest version of Storyline or a bug that can be fixed? Could you please let me know how Articulate plans to proceed with this discrepancy?

Hi Keyur!

If you need to distribute your Storyline content offline, publish for CD.

After publishing, do any of the following to share it with others. (Tip: Double-click the Launch_Story.exefile in the published output to view the course.)

  • Burn the published output to a CD.
  • Burn the published output to a DVD.
  • Copy the published output to a USB drive.
  • Zip the published output and copy it to a network drive. (Learners must extract it before viewing.)
  • Zip the published output and email it to others. (Learners must extract it before viewing.)

Hi Leslie,

Thanks for your input. My name is Prath and I am part of Keyur's team. Our business requirement is such that we want the same course to be playable both online (on the server over HTTP(S)) and offline (downloading and playing over an iPhone and iPad) scenarios. We have been using the Web publishing method to publish courses - all of which have been working fine for both scenarios, until now (v 2.4).  Only in the current version (v2.4) we have been experiencing audio issues only whilst playing the courses locally over the iDevices - on Safari they work fine but not on the iOS Simulator. Our requirement is to play the content over the simulator after downloading the courses from the server.

Also, in the suggestion that you have provided, the SCORM API calls will not work. So, unfortunately, the publishing offline scenario will not work for us. We would want to continue publishing using the 'Web' method but would like for the course to work in both scenarios as it was always doing up until now.

Thanks,

Prath

Again, thanks Leslie for your help. I would really appreciate if you could help us get some traction on the resolution of this issue by creating the required awareness within your group since this has been holding us back pretty bad.

In the mean time, I would also have someone from our team submit the support ticket for this issue. As I said, this was working with a previous version (1.6) but not with the current.

Thanks,

Prath
