problem with skippable, yet "required", Pick Many type survey question

Oct 22, 2015

With the required Pick Many questions I have created,  the user is still able to skip and advance to the next slide without selecting anything at all.  How can I get the invalid response pop-up to show up and do its job (it shows up in the single preview option, but not when I preview the scene as a whole.)  A possible complicating factor is that I have created 3 branching triggers to various follow-up question slides depending on their responses.

Thanks!

Deirdre

Hi Debbie,

Are you allowing the feedback and branching set up here to control that or did you add your own triggers? If they don't select an answer what slide are they branched to? Are you using a submit button or do they just click next? If not using the submit button they won't be required to answer. Have you made it a required question as shown here?

If none of those touch on what you've set up or are experiencing, we'll want to take a look at the .story file as it's difficulty to say without seeing what you've set up. You can share it here using the "add attachment" button at the bottom of a reply.

Hi Deirdre,

Thanks for sharing here - you'll want to check the trigger order of your "submit" triggers. Make sure the first trigger is the one to submit the interaction vs. what the users should see based on when they submit. That should allow you to see the "invalid answer" pop  up if they haven't selected anything.

Also, I was unsure about a number of your triggers to adjust the state of checkboxes to normal when clicked? Their initial state is normal - and when clicked they automatically go to the "selected" state but it's changing different checkboxes? I'm not sure what you're looking to accomplish there - but I thought I'd point it out.

Yes, moving submit interaction trigger to the top of the trigger stack does work for making the invalid answer pop-up as expected, but fixing that has broken how the branching was designed to work.

The person who created the question wanted a selectable "none at all" option, and by clicking it to unselect anything that had been selected before, and vice versa.  They also wanted that selection to skip over a couple of followup slides. They also wanted the selection of the "other" option to bring up an additional follow-up slide.

The problem seems to be that the submit interaction trigger also automatically fires the advance to designated next slide at once, but I want to use a subsequent series of triggers to determine exactly which of three slides to advance to, depending on  the user's selection.  How can I make sure that the additional triggers fire so as to advance to the appropriate slide instead of a designated next slide?

It does seems like it would be far easier just to find a way to make the invalid answer popup actually pop up when the user clicks submit without clicking on any checkboxes at all.  Is there a way I could set a trigger for it if no checkboxes are checked to make sure it is fired?

Hi, Deirdre -- Thanks for your response and I just wanted to see if I am able to assist you today as Ashley is out until tomorrow. I thought I'd mention that if I am understanding correctly, moving the Submit trigger to the top of the list will cause the invalid pop up to appear if nothing is selected. Did you have something else in mind or something else you were hoping to have happen? Any further details would be appreciated! :)

Came up with Plan B over the weekend- Since moving the Submit Interaction trigger to the top of the stack doesn't work with the custom branching we were going for, I just set the Submit button to be disabled until the user selects at least one of the PickMany options. It doesn't bring up the Invalid Answer pop-up, but it does preserve the branching functionality we needed.  (but if you know a way to nudge that pop-up to pop up, please let me know!)

Hi Deirdre,

Thanks for the update and i'm glad Christie was able to assist. The other thought I had while reading your post was in regards to needing a "none at all option" which you were using with triggers - instead of using it as a trigger set up, I assume you looked at using that as an option? I suspect that may be the same element as your trigger behavior in terms of automatically branching to the next slide - but just another thought for you here.
