Process Training

Aug 09, 2012

Hi every ... I'm loving Storyline although I'm still fairly new to the game ... I've been tasked with creating a process training elearning programme that includes simulations .... any ideas that I could start with?

Hi Claire - and welcome to Heroes

The first thing I would do is to plan - staying away from the software for the moment.

Personally - for process training I start with a pad of sticky yellow labels, and plot out, on the wall or desk, each step - 1 step per sticky.

I then figure out what come BEFORE this - i.e. WHY is the training necessary?

What benefits will accure from doinfg ot this way? How much is the company LOSING, or what are the penalties for NOT doing it this way?

As you are new to this, I would try and stay simple for starters...

Start perhaps with the "Process Interaction" that is built into SL, (see image below) - Insert > Slides > Process Diagram. It will guide you how to use it if tyou look at the details built in - but you can delete/amend anything.

What type of simulation do you need? You can simulate a simulation (if that makes sense) - by setting up for example multiple Quiz questions that follow on from each other What do you do first ? > How do you do this > Which one of these forms/tools do you use? > What is the first menu you choose etc. and of course you have screencamming built into SL.

Perhaps you can tell us some more, and we can help you with the initial build to get you started.

Hope thsi helps.

Just shout when you need more help and assistance - and once again, welcome to Heroes.

Thanks Bruce! I appreciate the speedy response and the guideline steps. It helps J

The simulation (which I ‘m used to building in Adobe Captivate) has to be a walk-through of how to complete a rather complex spreadsheet. The brief I was given is rather slim:

·         Show learners the big picture (i.e. where does the completing spreadsheet fit into the bigger picture)

·         How to complete the spreadsheet

This is the first time my boss wants to trial SL, including a sim that’s not done in Captive.

There are a variety of ways that you could attack this...

What might be fun is to just display the entire s/s, almost "scaring" people - then explain that very often this is how it is done in real life. You are going, however, to start from scratch......

Start by showing them how to access the s/s.

Show them naming conventions etc.

Build it up - feature by feature, step bt step, occasionally linking back to the "master" sheet to show where and WHY that thing exists.

Remember - the "output" is NOT the spreadsheet - the output is WHY and HOW the spreadsheet helps the business.

  • What purpose does the s/s have?
  • What happens if you get it wrong or do not do it?
  • What has been the business BENEFIT of the s/s over the last year/2 years?

Get some practice with SL screen recording, I would use very small bursts to do this course. It sounds like the IDEAL situation to use "Show/Try/Test" modes, so that you use the same recording to show them, let them try, and ultimately check if they have got it understood.

If you have not used these before, do not worry when Sl suddenly "closes down" when you start the recording, it does that   It will come back once you complete the recording.

There's all kinds of ways you could do this. I would create a new Story line "Scene" for each process step. You could illustrate the over all process by using the interaction, then dig deeper. with each Section, where Section = "Step, Business Impact/Purpose, Show, try, Test, Summary.

Hopefully that helps. Just shout if you need more.

Glad that was useful.

Anything we do in business, training, spreadsheets - WHATEVER...is only done because:

1> It increases profit

2> It reduces loss

3> It reduces corporate or personal risk

4> It is required for compliance purposes, (which could be seen in terms of 2> and/or 3> , because if you do not do it you get fined)

5> It increases brand loyalty from customers, (which could be as subsections of 1> and 2> )

That's it. It's not because "People are our greatest asset..." etc., they are only an asset because they help one of those 5 things.

As soon as they are not seen to do so, they are moved, or out.

Frame training in these terms and you get a much more powerful statement on why the training matters, and it also creates a course that the Board can understand, as it is framed in their language (money and risk-mitigation). Doing that never harms anyone.
