Prompt to resume not working (courses starting from beginning)

Feb 06, 2019

I've searched the forum for an answer to the particular issue I'm having, but I haven't found an exact solution.

I've published several courses to our LMS and the majority of the time, our users are able to complete them. We have the odd case where someone might complete the course and close out but their status will show as Incomplete. When they go back in to the course, it's starting them from the beginning. This can also happen if they were part way through the course.

I publish the courses in SCORM 2004 so it's not a character limit. The resume option is set to prompt when resuming.

I've looked at the suggestions in this link.

https://articulate.com/support/article/resume-doesnt-work-as-expected-after-meeting-the-completion-requirement

I usually set the tracking to the quiz results slide and the reporting shows as Complete/Incomplete.

I haven't tried the last option as I'm not sure how it works. If I set the variable to False, would their progress be saved and not put them back to the beginning of the course?

Is there anything that I'm missing that would be causing the courses not to resume where they left off when clicking on Yes to resume?

Thanks.

Hi Jane,

We've seen issues like this creep up due to suspend data limits, but you mentioned you're using SCORM 2004. Can you check that you're using 4th Edition? You can find that detail by following these steps:

Publish >> LMS >> Reporting and Tracking >> Reporting tab

If you confirm that you published with SCORM 2004 4th Edition, our Support team may need to review your LMS debug data. You can reach out to them here for next steps!

Hi Alyssa,

Our LMS created an app that enables our users to do their training when they don't have a WiFi connection. SCORM 2004 4th edition isn't support by the app but 3rd edition is so that is what I publish in when I publish courses.

Could it be the length of the courses that is causing the issue? For most of our courses, the exam and course content is contained in one file. Would we need to consider breaking up our course content into smaller lessons?

Thanks, Jane. While we can't support the behavior you're seeing inside the app, we do want to ensure it's working correctly on desktop browsers and mobile browsers.

A good way to test your content outside of your LMS is to use SCORM Cloud. Our team would be happy to assist with that testing.

If that works for you, you can upload your file privately to our support team here. We'll give it a test and let you know what we find!

Thanks Alyssa. I tested 2 different courses on SCORM Cloud, and both worked. I wasn't brought back to the beginning on either course.

I did notice that when I select Complete/Incomplete as the option to report to LMS, the status in SCORM Cloud showed as failed even though I completed the course in testing.

If I changed it to Passed/Incomplete, the status showed as Passed.

Could this be what is causing the issue with courses starting from the beginning for some users?

Hi Jane,

First, it's good to hear the resume behavior worked correctly on SCORM Cloud. That let's us know that there isn't a resume issue in your Storyline file.

Now, let's tackle the passed and failed reporting. Are you tracking the number of slides viewed?

From here, it would be best if we could test your file to find out what's going on with the reporting. If that works for you, you can upload your file privately to our support team here. We'll give it a test and let you know what we find!

Hi Colin,

It doesn't appear we determined one cause with Jane, so it'd help to know a bit more about your publishing options and course in general.

  • Have you enabled a prompt to resume?
  • What is the completion/tracking method you're using?
  • What version of Storyline are you using?
  • Have you tested the content anywhere else, such as in SCORM Cloud?
