Publish a word doc

May 14, 2013

goodevening.

I have tried to publish a word document and after all the steps the document will publish. However in the word document the slide layers are not the same as in articulate storyline. Some features of the base layer are visible in the word doc, but not in articulate. See enclose example.

Could someone advice me what I do wrong?

Warm spring greetings

Hi there Ettina!

Are you not wanting to show the layers when you publish to Word? If so, you could simply disable that option and the layers shouldn't show up in you document, at all.

To do this, click "Publish" and select "Word". Under "Properties" you'll be able to uncheck the option for "Show Layers":

Does that work, or do they still show up in the Word document?

Thanks!

Hi Christine, thanks for your replay.

Unfortunately this is not the answer. I want the layers to be shown, however they differ from articulate. In the eclosed document you see two screenshots. the 1st is from articulate the second from word. In the word version you can see the baselayer, which you cannot see in articulate.

I don't understand what I do wrong. Hope you can help.

Good morning Ettina,

I'm afraid I cannot tell you what's going wrong, probably because I'm not entirely sure what you want to see :) You do want to show the layers, correct? I'm confused by your statement that they're not showing up in Storyline the same say on the slides.

Are the layers in Storyline in a different position? And I'm also not sure why the "base layer" wouldn't be shown in Storyline.

I have looked at the screenshots you provided, and from what I can see, the main layer is showing along with what appears to be additional layers overlapping in the second screenshot.

Could you share the .STORY file, please? Maybe if I can see how it's all set up, I can get a better idea of what's happening and how you'd like it to appear in the Word document.

Thanks very much, Ettina! :)

Hi Christine, yes I find it difficult to explain.

In storyline the layers are shown without an overlap from the baselayer, top screenshot. So storyline is showing the module, the way I have written it.

When I publish it in a word.doc the layers are shown with an overlap from te baselayer, second screenshot, like you just said.

The storyline file is to big to upload, is there an other option to send you the file?

Hi there Ettina,

Thank you very much for the file :)

I'm looking specifically at the slide you first showed in your original post. I do see that the first slide inserted into the Word document does show the base layer, without the additional layers. Now, the next two screenshots that are inserted do show the layers, but over the base layer content. They seem to be in the correct positions from what I can see.

Are you wanting to show the layers without the base layer content? Basically, how the content would look on the slide if you had the layer selected? I don't think you can do this using a default option in Storyline, but you could certainly insert your own screenshots of the layers, if you're just trying to make a record of what the layer contains, without the other content displaying in the screenshot of the slide.

Another option would be to hide the objects on the base layer. However, keep in mind that by doing this, you're hiding the content on the base layer and only showing the content on the layers. I'm attaching an example of how this would look.

I hope this helps :)

Thanks, Ettina!

Issues with the way SL publishes to Word have been discussed a number of times in this forum and many of us believe it's something that needs to be addressed in an update. Not only do you see the overlapping layers issue you point out but also the quality of the screen shots is barely usable at best with the text frequently illegible.

Ettina, if you haven't already, please submit a feature request/bug report as the more the developers hear about an issue the more likely it's to be resolved in an update.

Christine Hendrickson

Good morning Ettina,

I'm happy to hear that will work for you :)

I don't personally believe it's a bug, no. The layers are displaying that way because that's how Word sees the content when it's pulled through.

I do agree that some additional functionality and options would be awesome for this, though :) If you haven't already, I would suggest following Brett's lead for submitting a feature request.

Thanks you two! Have a wonderful day,

Christine

I'm with Ettina and Brett. We need to be able to send a Word storyboard to our customers in a way that they can see the content of every layer. It's not at all helpful for the base-layer items to publish in the screenshots if they have been hidden. I will try making a version just for publishing Word docs and hide all the base layer items, then combine the two Word docs. BUT, that is a lot of trouble.
