Publishing first e-Learning

Apr 19, 2016

I've just tried to publish my first e-Learning attempt to pass on to my peers for review and comment. It seems to be hanging and not completing. Is this normal? How long should it take, does anyone have any advice?

I'm still using the free trial at the moment and publishing to the LMS platform in Scrom 1.2.

Hi Angela,

I see you're trying to publish your first course, it's unfortunate though that you're having difficulties. We can try to narrow things down and check which might be causing this by:

  • Making sure you are working locally (your C: drive) with all project and source files saved on your machine and not on a network or a USB drive.
  • If you are working locally, try creating and publishing a completely new project, to see if its specific to the original project file or to all projects you create.

Have a go on these and let me know how it goes.

Hi Angela,

I'd agree with Angelo's thoughts above - and you can read more about working locally and why that's important here, in addition to the file name and path and what impact that may have on your publishing. Also it's not a bad idea to try and close out the other programs that could be impacting this set up.

Please let us know if you're still having difficulty as it's certainly not normal and something we'd want to help you get to the bottom of.

Hello Angela,

I'm sorry to hear about this new issue your facing. However, if you're already working locally with your files as described here, you may want to try these steps below that I found on another discussion:

  • Reboot your computer. (this may help, but if issue persists..)
  • Reboot your computer and temporarily disable all backup and sharing programs.
  • If the issue gets resolved, re-enable the backup and sharing programs.
  • If the issue re-occurs again, you may want to ask the application vendors on how to exempt your Articulate files, so they won't become locked.

You can also try renaming the source file or moving it to another folder (new one).

Here are some steps as well that you could perform if you continue to see this behavior.

Hi Angela,

Were they originally located on a non-local drive and that's where you moved them from? I'd agree with Angelo that a reboot could help with this issue and then you may also want to look at importing the files into a new project as shown here.

Also just an FYI that responding via email includes your signature here so you are welcome to edit the post and remove that information.

Thanks for you help everyone. Oops with the email reply. :) Newbies hey!!!

So  I managed to get it working by moving the file to my desktop and publishing it from there. I still get the odd occurrence of the publish not working but I've worked out if I cancel the publish and reopen the file again it usually works second time around.

Hi Angela,

I'm glad to hear you were able to get them to publish. You mentioned the first time often doesn't work and then the second time does, and that is something we had heard in earlier updates of Storyline that has sense been resolved. I'm curious if you know what update of Storyline you're using? You'll want to confirm you're using the latest update which is Update 9 and you can double check that by clicking on the Help tab -> About Articulate Storyline. If you're using an earlier update you can download Update 9 here.

Well that checks one thing off the list then. Has this just recently started happening? Have you gone through a repair of Storyline? Have you tested publishing with only Storyline open and all other applications closed? Do you get an error message the first time you publish? It may be easier to troubleshoot this in a support case so that our engineers can take a look at what's happening directly on your system - you can reach out to them here.
